This presentation will be a little different that what you are used to seeing here. Many of you are used to seeing Goddard in its Science role, a role where we are known as fierce competitors, leaders, and innovators when it comes to advancing the scientific knowledge of humankind.
But today, we want you to see how we are ALREADY applying our amazing capability in a support role for our HEOMD customers as they plan our Nation’s pathway into the Solar System.
We want you to see how we are “COMPLETING instead of COMPETING” in order to support the Agency and the Nation.
We want you to see how our Science, the world class science and missions, that we, ALL of US, have accomplished over these past decades, is enabling new, safer, and more amazing Exploration for our Agency.
YOU KNOW THAT our science research capabilities are world class………..
BUT ……
DID YOU KNOW that we are APPLYING those capabilities to the problems associated with Human Exploration?
Did YOU KNOW that our technology advances in communications, robotics, and science are ALREADY being integrated into the new HEOMD vision for space exploration?

2. Optical Communications

You are all probably familiar with Goddard’s Agency role in providing the Near Earth Network, the vital communications systems that enables high speed, high reliability communications with everything between here and the Moon!!
You are probably familiar with how this system supports dozens of active science missions and has been responsible for many terabytes of data now used by our scientists for discoveries in all branches of Earth and Space Science
BUT DID YOU KNOW
that the Goddard team is working on a new Optical and even Xray communications system that will able to support hundreds of megabits per second communications with astronauts in lunar or even in planetary regimes (like Mars)?
Through our support of our HEOMD customers, this system lays the groundwork, the communications infrastructure, that will be required to enable the telemetry links to support Earth to Mars operations. Maybe more importantly than the technical communications, this system will enable our astronauts to hold video chat session with their doctors or with their families while they are away on mission!!
AND DID YOU REALIZE
that while we are supporting our HEOMD customers, we are also laying the groundwork that will provide the incredible science that their exploration success will enable?

Suggested talking points:
You are all probably familiar with the Goddard Satellite Servicing Project Office. In SSPO Goddard is working to develop satellites that can “service” science satellites. Doing so could give them new life by refueling them or even help give them birth by helping with deployment problems. In this way we are supporting our core Science Mission.
BUT DID YOU KNOW
That systems from our Satellite Servicing efforts have ALREADY been used by HEO as part of NASA Exploration and Operations mission?....
That our team has already deployed a robotic machine vision system on ISS that supports autonomous docking?....
That we have ALREADY deployed an External Leak Locator to ISS that is already on the job?....
That we have developed a Visual Inspection Robot that extends an astronaut’s ability to view the entire ISS (or maybe parts of a Deep Space Gateway)?....
That we developed a tool that attaches to an astronauts suit that extended her reach more than 100 feet and still was controllable enough to cut a piece of tape?
That we are working on a system that transforms the outside of a space vehicle into a robot-managed storage system, freeing up space inside for our astronauts!
And again….while all of these and our future efforts are helping HEO be safe and successful, these same capabilities are going to be used to inform our next generation of science missions….
….enabling them to do things and discover things that are HARD TO IMAGINE now
But lets try…….
Imagine collaborative platforms in space that share instruments for different missions,
Imagine mission elements that can “lend” each other spare parts,
Imagine autonomous, robotic systems that support space-entrepreneurs as they mine asteroids

We know you are familiar with Goddard’s world-class science in Earth, Astrophysics, Heliophysics, and Planetary Sciences.
BUT DID YOU KNOW…..
that GSFC scientists help train astronauts in the scientific techniques they will use on planetary surfaces?
that GSFC space weather models are used to assess landing sites AND protect our crews from space radiation?
that GSFC scientists have created tools that do double duty as research instruments AND as crew safety systems during planetary transit
We are supporting the architectures that will enable the science of the future while at the same time APPLYING the science we already know to our Exploration mission.

We want you to know that the GSFC family is already supporting the HEO Vision for exploration.
We want you to know that our support comes not from some new initiative but from the deep strength that is derived from our CORE Science Mission.
We want you to know that we value our existing support relationship with HEOMD and the Centers that serve in Lead roles for the exploration mission…..and that we are here to “COMPLETE not to COMPETE” those roles.
We want you to know that we are currently bringing more focus and visibility to these efforts here on Center and among our stakeholders and customers.
We want you to help us ensure that the architectures and systems that we design now for HEOMD explorations will ALSO support the AMAZING SCIENCE that the exploration will enable.
