1 Thurgood Marshall He was the first African-American appointed as a Supreme Court Justice. Mr. Marshall served from October October 1991.

2 Irma Rangel Ms. Rangel was the first female Mexican American Texas legislator. She won the election in 1976.

3 John Hancock Mr. Hancock served as president of the Second Continental Congress, He was also the first and third Governor of Massachusetts and the first person to sign the Declaration of Independence. He signed the Declaration of Independence July 4, 1776.

4 Theodore Roosevelt Theodore (Teddy) served as the 26th president of the Unites States from 1901 to Teddy is well known for his conservation efforts. He created federal protection for almost 230 million acres of land, 150 national forests, 51 federal bird reservations, five national parks, and 18 national monuments.

5 Amelia Earhart She was the first woman to fly alone across that Atlantic Ocean in

6 Robert Fulton Mr. Fulton invented the commercially successful steamboat. Clermont made its debut on August 17, 1807, steaming upriver from New York to Albany, and it soon entered into commercial service.

7 W.E.B. Dubois Mr. Dubois was the founding member and head of the NAACP (National Association of the Advancement of Colored People) which fought for racial equality. The NAACP was founded in 1909.

8 George Washington Carver
Mr. Carver was a scientist and inventor. In 1896, he began to teach at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. The hundreds of products he invented included plastics, paints, dyes and even a kind of gasoline. He was also an advocate for peanut farming.

How did he/she help others? Slide #5- What do you like about this person? Slide #6- When did he/she die? If he/she is still alive, tell us how old the person is and where he/she lives.
