What is Ecology? Eco=environment -logy=Study of

2 Levels of organization
From smallest to largest Atoms Molecules Organelles Cells Tissue Organs Organ systems Organism Population Community Ecosystem Biosphere

3 Organism An individual living entity that meets the criteria as a living being.

4 Population A group of the same organism living together in the same place at the same time.

5 Biological Community All the different populations that live in the same place at the same time.

6 Ecosystem Populations of plants and animals that interact with each other in a given area and with the abiotic components of that area.

7 Biosphere The portion of the earth that supports life

8 Habitat vs Niche Ecosystems function because the organism that reside inside it have a habitat and niche. Habitat is basically where an organism lives out its life. Habitat size varies, it could be as small a leaf or as big and vague as ‘grasslands’ Niche is the specific function of a population/individual. (how it makes a living)

9 Survival Relationships
All species have a survival relationship with the other populations in an ecosystem. There are 2 main types Predator/Prey Symbiotic

10 Symbiosis Symbiosis—living together Three types of symbiosis Mutualism
Commensalism Parasitism

11 Mutualism Both parties benefit

12 Commensalism One party benefits the other is neither harmed nor helped

13 Parasitism One party benefits at the expense of the other
Death is not an intended outcome unlike predator/prey
