Cell Notes
2
Cell Theory All living things are composed of cells.
Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things. New cells are produced from existing cells * If we can understand how the cell works, then we can understand how the creature works.
3
2 Types of Cells Prokaryotic Eukaryotic
Cells without well-defined nucleus Eukaryotic Cells with a membrane enclosed, well-defined nucleus
4
Number of Cells Possible
Unicellular How many cells do you think these organisms have? Multicellular How many cells do you think these have?
5
Size of cells Are cells small or big or somewhere in between? SMALL
Why are cells small regardless of the size of the organism?
6
Cells are like a Factory
7
Cell
8
Organelles (8 that both have)
Nucleus (Main Office) The control center for all cell activities Picture of a Nucleus Cell Membrane (Front Door) Controls entrance into the cell
9
Organelles (8 that both have)
Mitochondria (Local Power Plant) Produces cellular energy called ATP Golgi Apparatus (Shipping) Packages & Sorts macromolecules for delivery to organelles or secretion
10
Organelles (the 8 continued)
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) Conveyer Belt Highway system within cell. Also involved in Protein Synthesis Ribosome (Machine) Maker of protein
11
Organelles (the 8 continued)
Cytoskeleton (Support Beams )& Cytoplasm (Factory minus the Nucleus) Used to keep cell shape
12
Organelles (Plant Only)
Cell Wall Rigid Outer covering prevents gravity from crushing cell Chloroplast Captures energy for the cell, site of photosynthesis
13
Organelles (Plant Only)
Vacuole (Storage Closet) Large empty space used to help keep shape & store extra water, food & waste
14
Organelles (Animal Only)
Lysosome (Custodians) Packages & digests macromolecules Centrioles (Secretaries) Organizing centers for cell division
15
Examples Cell Membrane Cheek Cells Onion Skin Cells Nucleus Cell Wall
Potato Cells
16
Review What are the three main parts of the cell theory?
What are the two types of cells? What is the difference between them? Are we unicellular or multicellular?
