2 Chapter 13, section 2: Forms of energy
Key concepts: how can you determine an object’s mechanical energy? What are some forms of energy associated with the particles that make up objects? Key terms: mechanical energy, thermal energy, electrical energy, chemical energy, nuclear energy, electromagnetic energy

3 Mechanical energy You can find an object’s mechanical energy by adding the object’s kinetic energy and potential energy Mechanical energy = potential energy + kinetic energy You can think of mechanical energy as the ability to do work.

4 Example A football thrown by a quarterback has both potential and kinetic energy. The higher the football, the greater the potential energy (why?). The faster it moves, the higher the kinetic energy (why?). You can add these energies to get the mechanical energy.

5 Other forms of energy Forms of energy associated with the particles of objects include thermal energy, electrical energy, chemical energy, nuclear energy, and electromagnetic energy.

6 Thermal energy The total potential and kinetic energy of particles in an object is called thermal energy. Note: this is different from temperature.

7 Electrical energy Energy of electrical charges. Can be kinetic or potential energy.

8 Chemical energy Potential energy stored in the chemical bonds that hold chemical compounds together.

9 Nuclear energy Potential energy stored in the nucleus of an atom. Released during nuclear reactions, for example in nuclear fission.

10 Electromagnetic energy
Travels in waves, covers a spectrum:
