Energy Transformations & Conservation
Chapter 13 Section 3
2
How are different forms of energy related?????
MOST FORMS OF ENERGY CAN BE TRANSFORMED INTO OTHER FORMS The change from one form to another is called – ENERGY TRANSFORMATION.
3
Examples A Toaster - Electrical Energy (EE) transforms to Thermal Energy (TE) EE TE
4
ANOTHER EXAMPLE Your body – Chemical Energy (CE) in the food we eat to Mechanical Energy (ME) to move the muscles and to (TE) to maintain your body temperature. CE ME TE
5
Forms of energy Potential energy 1. elastic 2. gravitational
3. chemical Kinetic Energy -1.Mechanical 2. Thermal 3. Electric 4. Sound 5. Light
6
Most Common Transformation PE to KE
Stretching a rubber band …. you give it PE When you let it go…. it flies across the room …. a moving rubber band = KE
7
Law of Conservation of Energy
Energy can not be CREATED or DESTROYED it only changes FORM. TOTAL ENERGY IS SAME BEFORE AND AFTER TRANSFORMATIONS.
8
What about Friction?? When an object encounters FRICTION –
(surface and/or air) …. some KE to TE A top spinning on the floor has Mechanical Energy (ME) Thermal Energy (TE) It eventually falls down (runs out of energy) cause by the friction of the air and the surface. This is why no machine can be 100% efficient!
9
Adjustment to the Conservation Law
Albert Einstein said, “Matter and Energy can sometimes be transformed back and forth.” BUT MATTER AND ENERGY TOGETHER ARE ALWAYS CONSERVED.
10
WHAT IS MATTER?? ANYTHING THAT HAS BOTH…. MASS And
VOLUME – Takes up Space
