1 WARM-UP – Start your vocabulary cards/flaps/etc with the following words: (7 mins)
Energy Law of Conservation of Energy Energy Transfer Energy Transformation Work Open System Closed System Wave DO NOT PUT IN YOUR NB YET!!!

2 NOTEBOOK RESET Skip 3 pages from last semesters notes
Label that page “Table of Contents” Skip the page behind that Write our standards!

3 What To Do? Glue in Vocab Cards Write in Standards
Label “Energy Notes”, then glue in energy pictures, with enough space to label them

4 SC.7.P.11.2- Investigate and describe the transformation of energy from one form to another.
SC.7.P Cite evidence to explain that energy cannot be created nor destroyed, only changed from one form to another.

5 Essential Question What are the types of energy?

6 What is Energy? ENERGY BRAINSTORM! MEASURED IN JOULES (J)
The ability to cause change. MEASURED IN JOULES (J) ENERGY BRAINSTORM! What are ALL of the types of energy you can think of?

7 So… first some definitions
Potential Energy- stored energy due to the interaction between objects or particles Kinetic Energy- energy due to motion Mechanical Energy- the sum of the potential and kinetic energy in a system Wave- transfers energy from one place to another without transferring matter

8 Identify the Energy Kinetic

9 Identify the Energy Chemical

10 Identify the Energy Nuclear

11 Identify the Energy Potential

12 Identify the Energy Electrical

13 Identify the Energy Mechanical

14 Identify the Energy Sound

15 Identify the Energy Radiant

16 Warm-Up Identify and record 4 different kinds of energy in this classroom. Where do you think this energy comes from?

17 Essential Questions What are some examples of energy transforming from one form to another? What evidence is there that energy cannot be created nor destroyed, but only changed from one form to another?

18 So where does energy come from? Where does it go to?

19 Mini-Lab- IN YOUR NOTEBOOK
Examine the flashlight at your table. List the parts you can see, and predict what types of energy are involved in the operation of your flashlight. (NB) Turn it on. What do you think happened inside the flashlight to produce light? (NB) Take the flashlight apart and examine the parts of it. Was light the only type of energy produced? Why or why not? (NB)

20 Our Flashlight

21 Our Flashlight Electrical Thermal Chemical AND Radiant

22 Law of Conservation of Energy
Says that energy can be transformed from one form to another, but it cannot be created nor destroyed

23 Transfer VS Transformation
STILL THE SAME FORM TRANSFORMATION- NOT THE SAME FORM

24 Transfer vs. Transformation
Energy Transfer – when energy moves from one object to another without changing form Energy Transformation – when one form of energy is converted to another.

25 Practice! Radiant Chemical

26 Practice! Chemical Mechanical

27 Practice! Electrical Thermal

28 Practice! Kinetic Mechanical Electrical

29 Activity- IN YOUR NOTEBOOK
Examine the picture, looking for the types of energy listed in the table. Color each example of energy the color that corresponds to it in the table. Next, examine the picture again… this time looking for transformations. Number each transformation you find, and create a table in your notes with the number and transformation(s)
