1 Notes 10.1: Energy Flow

2 Law of Conservation of Energy
Energy can’t be created or destroyed, just transferred from one form to another. A Rube Goldberg machine is an example of energy transfer in a closed system.

3 Forms of energy: Mechanical Energy Kinetic Potential (gravitational, rubber bands, springs) Work

4 Electromagnetic energy (EM Spectrum)
Radiant Energy Electromagnetic energy (EM Spectrum) Light, infrared, UV, X-rays , etc.

5 Electrical Energy Flow of electrical current

6 Energy stored in bonds that join atoms
Chemical Energy Energy stored in bonds that join atoms Gasoline, food

7 Nuclear Energy Fusion – combining nuclei (stars) Fission – splitting nuclei (power plants)

8 Thermal Energy Heat is the flow of this energy Can be used to do work

9 Remember: You can’t get more energy out than is put in. There is no such thing as free energy. Perpetual motion is impossible due to the effects of friction.
