ProjectWise Overview Some background information
So, let’s begin with a quick overview of ProjectWise.

Infrastructure Project Information Needs
Effectively utilize many large inter-related files, distributed among functions and locations using disparate software Owners Designers Constructors Inspectors Models Drawings Data First off, why is a solution like ProjectWise even necessary? Talking Points: Projects involve many people in different roles Who interact with many types of information including large files, that are inter-related and typically distributed across companies and geographies Using a wide range of task specific software applications and corresponding file formats Design projects of all sizes experience many of these same collaboration issues to some degree.

Is This Your Situation Today?
FTP Site Network Drive Network Drive Network Drive Network Drive Share Point Site FTP Site Network Drive Many of us in the design industry are familiar with chaotic file sharing systems like this one. Talking Points: (A quick preface to next slide, as a build) Is your project information scattered across different places, in different systems, with redundant copies? Are you confident your team can get to the information you need quickly And that the information they get is the latest information, and is well coordinated with others? Network Drive

Multi-Vendor Software Support Accelerated Access for Distributed Teams
ProjectWise Core Capabilities Multi-Vendor Software Support Accelerated Access for Distributed Teams Business Collaboration Platform Engineering Project Collaboration Platform ProjectWise V8i That’s where ProjectWise comes into play. ProjectWise is Bentley’s Project Team Collaboration Platform for the Design and Construction of Capital Projects. At it’s core, ProjectWise coordinates design information across distributed offices. ProjectWise provides a unified set of industry-proven services for engineering content management, intelligent deliverables publishing, and iterative project review. Unlike mapped network drives and FTP sites and other mainstream file sharing and document management offerings… ProjectWise delivers multi-vendor software support for managing design and construction information, and for streamlining information sharing within integrated project teams. It delivers accelerated file access for all project participants to overcome the problem of sharing large design models, enabling them to share work-in-progress and collaborate in real-time. And it has in-depth understanding of engineering content for integrated project teams that need to work with compound architectural and engineering documents that include many complex external reference relationships and dependencies. In addition – when combined with a business collaboration platform like Microsoft’s SharePoint – CIO’s can for the first time connect corporate and engineering teams in a common environment.
8
Project Security and Permissions
Login Based Folders Files Workflow Based So let’s talk about some of the specific benefits ProjectWise delivers to design projects. ProjectWise provides secure access to project information. Here we see and architect logged into their project. Notice the ProjectWise user interface is very similar to Windows Explorer. The pane on the left side has my projects and directories. The right side shows my files and file properties. But there is a lot more information immediately available to the user if we look carefully. Note the pencil icon next to each of the files in the Architecture directory. This let’s the user know they have write access to each of these files.
9
Project Security and Permissions
Login Based Folders Files Workflow Based If we change users on the project from an architect to a structural engineer notice the engineer sees the same files but the pencil icon has changed to a book. This tells the engineer he has read-only access to these files. Project rights can be set based on role, file type, application association or even the state of a file in a workflow. As an example, the files in the directory are in the 30% Design state. IF I wanted to hide files in early design from anyone other than the design members of my team, I could create a Schematic Design state which allowed only the appropriate team members to know those files existed. This would allow my design team to work on several ideas without interfering with other work on the project. Once we determined which option we wanted to proceed with we could move it to the 30% Design state and it would become visible to the rest of the design team.

Why ProjectWise and Revit?
User Demand From the Building and Architectural Practices of Current ProjectWise Users A/E, EPC, Owners and Contractors Standardize on Work-Sharing Platform Bentley ProjectWise Product Strategy Be the Best Work-Sharing Platform for the AEC Industry Multi-Office, Multi-Application, Multi-Discipline Format, Application Agnostic Invest Heavily in “Application Integration” So, why would Bentley integrate with Revit. First of all, Bentley values the Revit community. While that may sound unusual given the history between Bentley and Autodesk, understand that Bentley’s primary goal is to provide world-class solutions to design, manage and operate design projects. In that role, we work with a large number of multidiscipline, multiplatform design firms, many of which use ProjectWise to maintain their high-level project quality. These firms generated a strong demand for Revit integration. Secondly, this capability fits well into the overall ProjectWise product strategy. ProjectWise provides deep integration into Bentley and Autodesk applications, as well as Microsoft, ESRI and others – and we recognize that Revit users that want to work share across multiple offices need solutions to help them. Organizations are using ProjectWise to share work and leverage resources across the globe, so enabling Revit users to do this is a very natural extension of the ProjectWise value proposition.
21
The ProjectWise Integration for Revit
Overview So, let’s begin with a quick overview of ProjectWise.
22
Integration for Revit Enables Distributed Revit Worksharing with Large Models Allows Revit Users to Collaborate with the Same Central Files Regardless of Location Available to Entire Project Team Eliminate FTP/Robocopy Model All Users Use Revit the Way You Want them to Provides structure to your standards Eliminate Redundant Data and Servers Powerful Search Capabilities to Find Content Control Updates to Families, Details, and Templates ProjectWise enables worksharing for users working with large Revit models - this allows all your Revit project team members, regardless of who they work for, to all use Revit the same way, no mater where they actually work from. This eliminates the need for create FTP or robocopy file transfers just to synchronize work with the Central file. Because its integrated directly into Revit, ProjectWise also provides powerful tools to manage Revit standards, allowing you to reduce the number of redundant families managed on redundant servers. ProjectWise has built in search tools allowing your teams to find the content they need, and well as allowing your content management leadership to control distribution and access to content throughout your organization

“Regional” Office Michigan
How it Works Integration Server Manages Central Files Core of ProjectWise “Brain” “Main” Office Texas “Regional” Office Michigan WAN So , before I explain exactly what happened, let’s define some common terms that I will use frequently during the presentation. The ProjectWise system consists of a main server, called the ProjectWise Integration Server, a client, called ProjectWise Explorer, and a database, that controls all the file permissions and transactions. Managed files are not stored in the database, they are maintained on file servers throughout your organization.
24
“Regional” Office Los Angeles “Regional” Office Michigan
How it Works ProjectWise Caching Server Serves File(s) from Office(s) to Office(s) Reduces/Eliminates Trips Across the WAN to Access Files Passive and Active Caching “Main” Office Texas “Regional” Office Los Angeles “Regional” Office Michigan WAN To help speed up access to files that may be stored in far away servers, the ProjectWise Caching server can be used to serve files between offices. This is an optional “add-on” to the ProjectWise installation.
25
“Regional” Office Los Angeles “Regional” Office Michigan
How it Works Delta File Transfer (DFT) Enables WAN team members to work at LAN-like speeds Only transfers the changes to the file over the network Reduces the overall network Works from anywhere, no appliance needed Works for all ProjectWise users “Main” Office Texas “Regional” Office Los Angeles DFT “Regional” Office Michigan WAN What is not an add-on, but is “baked” into ProjectWise is our Delta File Transfer technology. This accelerates users access to files, by only transmitting the bits of the file that have changed between a user and the main file server storage area. The users can get the experience of working over a LAN when they are actually working over a WAN, and since ProjectWise provides this, it is available to all PW users, regardless of where they live – they do not need a hardware appliance.
26
Effect of Delta File Transfer
Value of DFT to Revit Users Available to All Users Eliminates FTP\RoboCopy Revit workflows where DFT is used includes: Synchronize to Central Reload latest Reloading changed linked files Subsequent file open (non-worksharing mode) Import/Export So, what is the overall benefit of PW Delta File Transfer for Revit? Well, first of all it is available to the entire team, regardless of whether they are in your organization, a subcontractor, a partner, an owner. Second it is available anywhere they are connected to PW – so from home, the field trailer, hotels, airports, etc. And third it does not need any appliance whatsoever, just a connection to PW In terms of Revit workflows, any operation that involves a file transfer will automatically use Delta file transfer, not just Synchronize to Central and Reload Latest, but also Reloading linked files, file open events if you are not using worksharing, and import\export workflows as well
27
DFT Impact on Revit Files
Tested Revit Synchronize with Central operations over a WAN between 2 cities 4,400 miles apart Average 135 ms latency Examined the performance with and without WAN hardware acceleration Tested performance of a large change 60 MB Central file -> synchronized 7 MB of data We did performance testing on the impact delta file transfer has on Revit files Our tests modeled a bit of a “worst—case” situation – a ProjectWise server with the Central file in Philadelphia in the US, and a Revit client in Eastern Europe 4,400 miles apart, with an average network latency of 135 ms. We used a decent size Central file – 60 MB and repeatedly synchronized a 7 MB local change. We could have used larger Central Files, this was a good test case using a user-supplied file. In general, the larger the file, the greater the percentage of optimization you will see. So, what did we see? as well
28
Test Results Tests Synch Time (min) Revit over WAN ~6.5 ProjectWise-integrated Revit over WAN ~1.5 7 MB change synchronized with a Revit Central file 4,400 miles away with a network latency average of 135ms Just using Revit, with no other systems in place, it took approximately 6.5 minutes to synchronize When we used PW-integrated Revit, we cut that time down to about 90 seconds
29
Test Results Tests Synch Time (min) Revit over WAN ~6.5 Revit over WAN with hardware acceleration ~2.5 ProjectWise-integrated Revit over WAN ~1.5 PW “Speed Up” 4.5x 1.75x -- 7 MB change synchronized with a Revit Central file 4,400 miles away with a network latency average of 135ms We also had the ability to examine the affect of a hardware accelerator. We ran the tests using Revit and the network accelerator (no PW) and we saw about 2.5 minutes to synchronize. Click
30
Results Interpretation
ProjectWise Delta File Transfer provided ~4.5x performance improvement compared to working on the WAN ProjectWise DFT provides 1.75x performance improvement compared to working on the WAN with a hardware network accelerator ProjectWise is compatible with pre-existing hardware accelerators Comparing the numbers, we see that adding PW made this scenario 4.5 times faster than not using any acceleration, and almost twice as fast as when using a hardware acceleration device Now I cannot guarantee you will see the same exact improvements, files and network conditions will affect the exact results but these are good ballpark numbers
31
The ProjectWise Integration for Revit
The Details So, let’s begin with a quick overview of ProjectWise.
32
ProjectWise Integration for Revit
An Extension to ProjectWise that allows interaction with the Revit Applications and Revit Data Supports Worksharing and Non-Worksharing Projects Brings Well-Established ProjectWise Technologies for Revit Users Delta File Transfer (DFT) Link/Reference Management Centralized File Management Security and Access Control When we mention integration, that means ProjectWise is directly tied into Revit’s interface and workflow. It important to note that ProjectWise does not change or dictate a particular workflow. You can continue to work n Revit the way you always have.
33
Working in Revit from ProjectWise
Comparing the numbers, we see that adding PW made this scenario 4.5 times faster than not using any acceleration, and almost twice as fast as when using a hardware acceleration device Now I cannot guarantee you will see the same exact improvements, files and network conditions will affect the exact results but these are good ballpark numbers
34
Revit Data Managed by ProjectWise
The User Workflows are almost the same as when working without ProjectWise ProjectWise provides a Structured Environment for managing Revit Data Everyone access the data from the same place No file shares to manage Ensure only the intended people have access to the project data Use ProjectWise project templates to accelerate project creation The PW integration module does not change how your users use Revit – we understand training is expensive, and re-training more so What we do provide is a structured environment for the management of Revit data so that it makes your training easier Everyone access the data the same way Eliminate network file shares, and FTP sites Ensure that only the project team members that should have access to the data, have access to the data You can even use PW project templates to kick-start your Revit projects, this can set up your folder structures, deliver documents, templates, families, and other data, reducing your project set up time
35
Creating a Central File in ProjectWise
Comparing the numbers, we see that adding PW made this scenario 4.5 times faster than not using any acceleration, and almost twice as fast as when using a hardware acceleration device Now I cannot guarantee you will see the same exact improvements, files and network conditions will affect the exact results but these are good ballpark numbers
36
Project Insight for BIM Coordination and Management
Central File Audit Trail Linked file display Dependency Management We saw some of these in the video – PW provides some insight to the model without having to be in Revit, and some things that there is no other way of knowing. The audit trail for the Central file records every synchronization \reload event We can display and model linked files and understand the dependencies – so the “what if I change this file” impact analysis is done for us Later we will see how PW extends the access to the revit model data beyond just the modeling team
37
Audit Trail Events ProjectWise Audit Trail
When was the File Modified to be a Central file? Who has taken a Local Working copy of the Central file? Each Synchronization With Central event Who?, When?, From What Computer? The PW Audit trail records the history of a PW document – who accessed it, when, from what computer, the type of action etc. We extended that to the Revit central file to include each synchronization event - – so your BIM coordinator can come in each morning and see who has not synchronized just by going to one spot –the PW audit trail
38
Model Dependency Management
The PW Audit trail records the history of a PW document – who accessed it, when, from what computer, the type of action etc. We extended that to the Revit central file to include each synchronization event - – so your BIM coordinator can come in each morning and see who has not synchronized just by going to one spot –the PW audit trail
39
ProjectWise for Managing Standards
ProjectWise has been used for years to manage CAD standards: Control access and updates to MicroStation cells and AutoCAD blocks Search for content by document name, metadata, or project properties Provide document naming controls Avoid re-work or rejected work due to standards compliance issues Save time finding the correct content For a long time organizations have used PW to manage and control their project standards, such as AutoCAD blocks, MicroStation Cells, and file naming PW has tools to help secure access, search, and distribute standards to avoid rework due to using the wrong standard, as well as make it easy and quick to find the correct content We have extended these capabilities for Revit standards and users
40
ProjectWise for Managing Standards
41
ProjectWise for Managing Content
Manage and access Revit families (RFA files) and Revit templates (RTE files) in and from ProjectWise Use integrated search dialog in the load family process Controlled access to standard details ProjectWise Explorer functionality valuable for Revit content management Thumbnails Custom environments and interfaces Views Access control When we talk about managing Revit standards, we are actually talking about being able to manage families and templates, accessing them from both PW Explorer and Revit, as well as being able to add metadata to them. Searching on the metadata, either from PW Explorer or from Revit makes it easy to find just the right content. Also, lots of organizations are managing details, including views, sheets, and schedules in RVT files. With PW you can add access control to these detail RVT files, ensuring that only the authorized users edit them, but users can still use these on their integrated projects. Don’t forget we also have audit trail on these documents so any changes that are made get recorded to our PW “change of custody” – This is a lot more then using multiple file servers and network shares to manage standards – lets take a look
42
ProjectWise for Managing Content
43
ProjectWise for Revit Content and Detail Management Benefits
Manage one copy of each RFA Eliminate managing duplicate files throughout your organization Allows for server consolidation Search tools make it easy to find the right content Maintain your content as your competitive advantage Simply security and control updated for content and details So, a quick review of what we just saw With PW you can get rid of managing the same RFA file on multiple servers, in fact you can consolidate servers PW has powerful, easily customizable search tools to help manage your content – you content can be a competitive advantage , don’t give up your content just to search on it PW provides access control and security to your standards, allowing you to take and maintain order
44
Collaboration Between Revit and AutoCAD Users
Now let’s discuss how ProjectWise can server as the project collaboration platform for AutoCAD and Revit
45
Large Projects Can Use Multiple Platforms
CAD and CAD-based products are still used for: Survey Site design MEP Roads and rail Hydraulics Landscaping design Need a structured process for Revit-CAD workflow data exchange and interoperability Large BIM projects that are modeled using Revit, frequently have CAD activities and content as well, such as site design and survey, often MEP, transportation, hydraulics, and landscape design are frequently done in CAD, and it is important that the Revit team and the CAD team share data and collaborate throughout the project.
46
ProjectWise for Revit-CAD Interoperability
Focus on AutoCAD and Revit users working together Eliminate: Design conflicts between CAD and Revit users , DVD, FTP file transfers Accidentally using “stale” data Missing deadlines due to communication problems Integrated Revit commands with ProjectWise: Export to CAD Import CAD Link CAD – with notifications on changes ProjectWise has been deeply integrated with AutoCAD for several years. This allows ProjectWise to provide the backbone for Revit-CAD interoperability helping to avoid design conflicts between CAD models and Revit models. This also does away with the need to , FTP or burn to DVD and ship models between organizations or disciplines, using stale data because one group forgot to update the other, or miss deadlines due to communication and collaboration problems. The technical keys to this strategy is the integration of Import, Export and CAD links with ProjectWise, but the real solution is the development of business processes based on the unique power of ProjectWise to ensure your teams work as teams
47
CAD/Revit Interoperability
48
Additional Functionality
Disable ProjectWise Integration option Manage RFA-type catalogs as sets Ensure type catalog set is not broken by move or rename Scan Reference discovers and builds RFA catalog sets Decal Type Images stored in ProjectWise Background Images from ProjectWise when rendering the open project in Revit Export rendered image to ProjectWise Notification messages include the user name who has locked the file.
49
Extending Revit Data Integrated ProjectWise viewer
Displays digital photographs, Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, and any other content that can be viewed by an ActiveX viewer control Allows for model view and review as a 3D PDF from ProjectWise Explorer without opening the file One easy way to bring your Revit models to a wider audience is through the use of PDFs – that way no one needs to have the Revit software or expertise to view the model. PW Explorer can host the PDF rigth in the preview pane – you do not even have to open the file! This makes it really easy to get the model out to everyone, instead of sending them a large file, usually too large to – just send them a link to it in PW Let’s see what this looks like
50
Extending Revit Data ProjectWise Web Server
Integrates ProjectWise content with Microsoft SharePoint Set of Web Parts that expose ProjectWise content Can be deployed in a non-SharePoint environment ASP.NET web page Surfaces Revit data to the project portal PW also has a web server, which can expose PW content to a wide audience through a SharePoint, or simple ASP.NET page. The PW Web Parts provide the access, the files are still managed by PW – the web is simply the tool to get to them. Now: This is the only thing that I will show you today that is not commercially available yet (ships with PW SS3) – and that is the ability to view the Revit model – actually a published version of the model to an i-model, from a SharePoint page Let’s see this

Here are a few more teams that use ProjectWise.
All BIG names. All successful companies. All streamlining and optimizing collaboration while sustaining infrastructure.
56
ProjectWise: Broad Industry Adoption
Used by 71 of the ENR Top 100 Design Firms Used by 34 of the ENR Top 100 Design-Build Firms Used by 220 of the top 500 infrastructure owner- operators Used by 25 of the 50 U.S. DOTs ““We’ve made ProjectWise our global work-sharing platform to streamline team collaboration on projects of all sizes and complexities. We're really happy with the way it allows widely distributed project teams to confidently share and manage project data. In addition, our strategic partnership with Bentley enables us to develop and implement world-class solutions that meet the needs of our integrated project teams around the globe.” Bruce A. Strupp/ATL CPE-Design Technology Director CH2M HILL You can see for yourself the breadth of adoption among design firms, design-build firms, infrastructure owner-operators and US Departments of Transportation. But the key observation here is what Bruce Strupp of CH2M Hill says about HOW they’re using it. It’s not just a point solution, ProjectWise is their global work-sharing platform for projects of all sizes and complexities that meets the needs of their integrated project teams around the globe. You can tell a lot about a solution not just by who uses it, but how they use it.
57
What Users are Saying “We currently utilize ProjectWise in 32 projects, across more than 1300 users, representing $3 billion in construction costs alone. As most of the design data we currently manage is Revit based, ProjectWise V8i (SELECTseries 2) with Revit integration, as well as Delta File Transfer, will further enhance our Revit community by incorporating their workflows with supercharged network performance. ProjectWise has been tremendous in helping us collaborate with our business partners. ” – Radhika Menon, CIO
