Wonder By: Giancarlo, Jacky

After The Video, I Think That:
I think that R.J. Palacio has the idea of telling people to look above their looks, above their faces, and really what’s inside their heart that counts. For a fact, it’s showing their empathy, and have kindness in themselves. R.J hopes this book inspires others to be kind to one another and mostly to actually try to influence others that they should be kind to one another. Like Jack Will could have ignored Auggie, he had other friends, but he willed to be friends with Auggie, just because he wanted to. He chose to sit down next to Auggie when he could have sat with his other friends. Summer could have sat with her friends, instead, she decided to forget about the rumors and sat down with Auggie instead, They are being kind to Auggie when they didn’t need to.

Interesting Facts: Interesting:
RJ Palacio found her inspiration from a girl who had facial deformation. I think this is interesting because RJ Palacio began writing Wonder for this reason. Even though she made a mistake of running away from that girl, she hopes others not to. RJ Palacio hoped that the book would bring kindness to the world. This describes one of the reasons this book has became famous. It says in the interview, “At the center of all these stories is the same challenge Palacio faced back at the ice cream store with her kids: how to confront the discomfort around difference; how to ‘choose kindness.’ ”. This tells me that kind RJ Palacio tried to go away from her own discomfort which she had regretted. I think that this is shown a mistake R.J. Palacio has made., so she doesn’t want to make it again.

Is Wonder Going to Help Children?
I think Wonder WILL help children. In the movie, it shows real life examples and a lot of possibilities. The events in the movie have a very high chance of happening in real life. It’s not like it’s impossible. It also has a variety of characters that change throughout the movie. In the beginning, the events are most likely going to happen in real life. But as they start to interact with Auggie, they change. That is why I think Wonder is going to help children have a better understanding for people that look like Auggie.

Why Is Nathaniel Newman a “real life” Auggie?
He is a real life a real life Auggie in many different ways. One way he is like Auggie is because he didn’t look normal, just like Auggie. He also had similar experiences with Auggie, like having a lot of surgeries. He is also normal like any other kid, but he just doesn’t look normal. He likes games, he has a lot of favorite foods, and he has a sense of humor.

The Message Of The Video
I think that the message of the video would probably mean that think before you judge somebody by their looks. Though, at the retreat, the children will never get teased and that’s pretty true too. The message is supposed to inspire others to be kind and not judging one another by their face but their behavior. Julian is rude and trying desperately to be popular, where as Auggie wishes for a friend and he acts kind to others. Like so, in the movie Wonder, Auggie helps Jack Will cheat on his test, when he needed, but however, Julian, when he wanted Jack on his side, he just said that he was hanging out with a freak, which in my opinion, is a bad way to get friends.

2 Syndromes and 1 Fact for Each
1. Treacher-Collins Syndrome Fact: Condition where cheekbones and Jawbones are not fully developed 2. Apert Syndrome Fact: A condition that has abnormal growth of the skull

Themes: Kindness: Kindness actually does count. When Auggie and Jack became friends, their relationship was beginning to build. As a matter of fact, Jack couldn’t stand Julian being so ridiculously rude. So as a matter of fact, it says in the text that Jack punched Julian hard, hating. Also, Jack said that if all the kids in fifth grade stood on a wall, he would pick Auggie. Later in the story, the kids that were on Julian’s side (Miles, Henry, Amos) turned to actually help Jack and August when they were being bullied by Edward Johnson (and a couple of other seventh graders). Also, August Pullman won the Henry Ward Beecher Award because his little silent strength expanded, for a fact that his little strength expanded, pushing away enemies and dislikes, he pulled forward to friends, and and others. I think another theme don’t think what a person is, know what a person does. Probably in the beginning, many kids thought that Auggie was a jerk and was ugly. But after a while, actually, he won the award, and he got the standing ovation, where the kids who stared at him in the beginning, turned to cheer and yell Auggie, and many gave Auggie a high-five, and patted him on the back a couple of times. Yes, see change also occurs. They didn’t really know him, they think they knew how he was until Auggie proved himself to the entire school that he was more than they think. The school now knows Auggie.

My Favorite Quote: My favorite quote from the book is “Everybody in the world should get a standing ovation at least once in their life because we all overcome the world.” For a reason too, each person has a talent to admire. Like me, I learn pretty quick, and Giancarlo is a child youtuber. I’m pretty sure many can do well. Our class, we are full of talents. Actually, everybody’s full of talent but some are just too afraid to show so. I’m pretty sure our school has a lot of talents. Many are in band and dance and glee, and music, and also some are even more admiring. But not many get a chance. I am very shy, and I can’t just go and shout myself to the world. Or maybe Giancarlo wants to show himself in the world, but he can’t, because few people let him to or at least support him. Auggie, at first, had no supporters or people who liked him. One by one, they got used to his face and looked above his face and into his actual feelings and tried to feel what he felt like every time he was stared like that. Yes, people should get shown to the world, as they do have talents that some may never have and some talents that will shock the world.

PSA Public Announcement: Stop Violence, Don’t Drink And Drive
Drinking and driving could take a life away. Crashing cars happen once every two seconds, which could be life taking. Drinking and driving with kill pedestrians and some cars explode, some people have instant fatal deaths, and many people either have brain injuries (most common) and bones (back, spine, spinal cord, face) and/or severe injuries to neck and internal injuries. The consequences is you might not see again for the rest of your life. Some may cause you to not look right. One person named Jacqui met a drunk driver. The drunk driver killed her two friends, and she broke her leg and her face. Now she can barely see, hear, and walk. She needs to apply a wheelchair and needs someone to push her. Yet, the drunk driver is now dead. Traffic marshals (the people who help guide vehicles) actually die from drunk drivers. Pedestrians, innocent people who live near highways, traffic marshals, the drivers, texting men and women. People have a sad life afterwards because of their lost ones. Babies are in the car, parents are in the car, meanwhile, one person is drunk. Care before you go drinking. Once your eyes go blurry, and your head goes round. It’s going to be you going dead. Besides, about 27% of all car crashes is from drunk driving. Also, around 39% of adults have over amount of alcohol, so people do die quite easily from all. See that image up there, how would you feel if you were the man who got hit? Please see both sides, how would you feel if your family or friends died when they were supposed to be home. That’s how the person would feel. What goes around, comes around! So if you don’t pay attention now, some person will smash your car one day, and you’ll be the bad one. Remember when drunk driving car crashes happen, seat belts don’t save save you. Chances are, you fly off the highway, the car either gets crashed by another car or the car crashes with another car and then one will die. No matter what happens, pay attention. That’s because every 48 seconds a drunk driver allows one to park here. Do you want to be handicapped? I guess not so, tell your parents not to drink 4 hours before they drive, especially alcohol, and tell them if they really want to drink then go and drink some water.

Message To Share with Others
I think the best message to share with others is that you have to know what’s inside not on the outside. If you see someone that has a weird face, you should try to know what they’re really like on the inside. If you never tried to do that, you might not know that that person could be the type of friend you want. So, you never know until you try. Just because someone doesn’t look nice, it doesn’t mean that they’re not ordinary like any other person. It’s what’s on the inside that counts.
