1 Notes: The Nitrogen Cycle

2

3

4 (1) Nitrogen Type of element or atom Common Compounds:
All living things made with Nitrogen compounds! Common Compounds: Nitrate (NO3) Nitrite (NO2) Ammonia (NH3) Urea (NH2)2CO Ammonium Nitrate (NH4NO3)

5 (2) Nitrogen & Bacteria ~80% of the air is Nitrogen Gas (N2)
Most organisms cannot do anything with N2 Most organisms use nitrates Bacterial Conversion: Bacteria in soil convert N2  Nitrates Bacteria in soil convert Ammonium  Nitrites  Nitrates

6

7 (3) Nitrogen & Decomposers
Break down dead remains of plants + animals Produce Ammonium Production of Ammonium allows other organisms (bacteria) to produce useful Nitrates!

8

9 (4) Nitrogen & Legumes Legumes: Fruit in a Pod
Peas, Beans, Lentils, Peanuts Have symbiotic relationship w/bacteria Able to convert N2 gas  Ammonium
