Teacher removes with kitchen mitts (check temp for safety) and places at students tables inside tray. Let cool a bit so that it is not dangerously hot / liquid wax. (Discuss intrusive vs. extrusive) Students compress softly using textbooks again while rock is still warm. (Not liquid Wax) Let rocks cool slowly for an extended period before opening them up. (Repeat these steps if necessary until rock appears metamorphic.)

Stack two hunks of Earth on top of each other. Carefully rotate and push down half of a clear straw into the hunks of Earth in a rotating manner. Once you’ve drilled through the whole sample, carefully remove the straw and lay it on its side. Use the scissors to cut down the straw exposing the rock layers. Draw the rock layers and process in your journal.
