Polynomials An expression that can have constants, variables and exponents, that can be combined using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, but: no division by a variable. a variable's exponents can only be 0,1,2,3,... etc. it can't have an infinite number of terms.

Variable Symbols or letters used to represent an unknown quantity (amount) Examples: x, y, a, 𝛽

Term Can be a number or variable, OR numbers and variables multiplied together Separated by addition or subtraction Examples: How many terms are in these expressions? 4 -16x B 3xy 3 4

Exponent 3 12 4 The number up in the air next to a base
The number of times you multiply something times itself Examples: 3 12 4

Like Terms Terms that have the same variable raised to the same power

Coefficient The number in front of a variable Examples: 123 -9 1

Constant -42 5 -8 A number that has no variable
It can be positive or negative Examples: -42 5 -8

Factors 1 and 6…. Or 2 and 3 3, 3, x, and y (x + 2) and (y – 3)
Numbers and/or variables that are being multiplied together to get a product Examples: 1 and 6…. Or 2 and 3 3, 3, x, and y (x + 2) and (y – 3) 3 and (z – 9)
