From Section 1.1 Characteristics of Living Things
2
Cornell Notes Details Main ideas
3
(쓰지마) Biologists study the interactions of life.
4
Biologists study the diversity of life.
great diversity of life on Earth ensures many possible niches for life (self reinforcing)
5
Biologists study the interactions within environments.
No living thing exists in isolation The study of one living thing always involves the study of the others with which it interacts
6
Ex.) studying wild rats means you have to study what it eats and what eats it
7
Biologists study problems and propose solutions.
Medical treatment Disease prevention (humans and other organisms) Endangered species prevention
8
Where are all the bees?
9
Characteristics of Living Things
Biologists have formulated a list of characteristics by which we can recognize living things …쓰새요:
10
Living things… Are organized
Show an orderly structure Made of cells (1 or many) which have DNA inside (DNA controls their life processes)
11
Make more living things
Reproduce (make offspring/babies) They die In order to continue the species, they need to make more of themselves. (Individuals do not need to produce in order to survive. Reproduction is needed for a species to survive) Requires energy (must take in and out something)
12
Change during their lives
They grow (bigger, new structures) and develop
13
Adjust to their surroundings
Adjust to their environment (air, water, weather, temperature, other organisms) Respond to stimuli (stimulus= cold weather, response= put on jacket) Adjust their internal environment (maintain homeostasis) Requires energy
14
Adapt and evolve Adaptations are inherited
Allows an organism to survive in their environment Environment changes and some adaptations are better in new conditions Those with better adaptations survive Adaptations allow them to have a certain job (niche) in their environment (they all play a role in the environment)
15
From “Is it Living?” Lab What did you THINK was a characteristic of a living thing that is not included in this list from the book?
16
On the bottom or back of your notes:
Write a summary of the key points that you just took notes on
17
Summary: Living things all: are organized (cells & DNA)
make more living things (reproduce) (requires energy) change during their lives (grow) (requires energy) adjust to their surroundings (respond to stimuli) (requires energy) Adapt and evolve (inherited)
