3 (Phi Delta Kappan. May 2013 Vol. 94 Issue 8, p. 27)
“Learning should be at the center of a school leader’s job, with good principals shaping the course of the school from inside the classroom and outside the office.” –Jody D Spiro (Phi Delta Kappan. May 2013 Vol. 94 Issue 8, p. 27)

4 Objectives of the Session
To understand the important role a SAM has to monitor and motivate the principal To understand the impact a SAM can have on how, when, what, and with whom a principal is working with To provide strategies and tools SAMS can begin implementing and applying immediately

9 What are some ways that you monitor your administrator during the SAMs process?

10 Share Small and Share Big
Share your snowballs with your table. Select two from the table to share out.

11 Essentials to Help Monitor and Motivate

12 Know Your Principal! Learning style survey Help w/entry points
Interest survey w/goals How can you celebrate in a meaningful way? Under what conditions does he/she work best?

13 Who Does Your Principal Work With the Most?
Some principals gravitate towards comfort zones Some principals gravitate towards areas of concern Very few will maintain a balance of opportunity for teachers That’s the SAMs job!

14 The Importance of Time Track

15 The MOST Important Aspect
Make sure the data points are being accurately input Originally During reconciliation Did you do it? How much time was actually instructional? What follow up can I schedule for you? Being consistent in choosing descriptors Descriptor definitions resource

16 During Data Entry Clarify by paraphrasing! What I heard you say was….
Are you saying that… Help me understand… What you expect from me is…

17 Having Accurate Data Make sure that all stakeholders, groups, and first responders list are updated as changes take place Without accurate and up to date data, monitoring and motivating is futile

18 Let the Data Serve as an Entry Point
SAM should familiarize himself/herself with all graphs available To use them, you need to know about them Ask at least ONE question/meeting from the graphs Have the principal’s goals printed to reference often

19

20 Graph Walk Pamela SAMple’s goals
Explore the different graphs displayed Write questions on the provided chart paper that you might ask your Principal based on the graphs.

21 Looking at the Data as a SAM
Take ownership Ask questions to promote growth… Help focus walkthroughs or feedback

22 “What specifically will you be looking at today during walkthroughs?”
Posted Objectives Classroom arrangement Word Walls Higher Order Questioning Discussion Techniques Student engagement Student callouts Student work

23 During the Next Daily Meeting
Ask the three essential questions that a SAM should ask with every event. Did you do it? How much of it was instructional? What follow-up do you want me to schedule?

24 Dig a Little Deeper Can you tell me a little bit more of what you saw?
What is one thing we could celebrate based off of that? How do you know? What is one thing you would like to see improved? How can I help you achieve this? When would you like to observe this again?

25 The Next Observation Before
Remind him/her of the purpose of the walkthrough/observation. After During reconciliation, ask your 3 standard questions…which are?

26 Depending on How it Went
Ask different reflective questions What is another way we might get through to the teacher? What would the teacher say he/she needs? What criteria are you using to observe this? Schedule a celebration!

27 Celebrate You must be able to recognize the efforts and/or change
Celebrate in a variety of ways Verbal praise Buy a treat from the interest survey

28 Give One Get One Write 3 different ideas of ways that you might celebrate the hard work of your administrator. Get up and share with your peers. Write down different ideas that you think might work for your administrator.

29 Wrapping Up Know and celebrate your role! Enter in data accurately
Use the data as entry points Be organized Have an arsenal of questions Celebrate often and in a multitude of ways
