Warm-Up Agenda Nick the narrator of the novel, characterizes himself as open minded, “inclined to reserve all judgments” about people. As a result, he explains, how people tend to trust him. Write about a time a person has opened up to you and shared secrets of his or her life. How did that make you feel? Do people still share secrets with you? If no one has ever shared a secret with you, reflect on why this might be. Read Chapter 1 of The Great Gatsby Create Character map in your composition book to work on throughout our reading In your journal, under your warm- up for today, write about your first impression of the book. What questions do you have right now?

Discuss with your partner Color Symbolism– create this chart You need 6 entries on the chart for Chapter 1 Respond in your composition book. Be sure to write the date on your response. Nick describes Gatsby on the second page of the book. He is only mentioned in connection with his “colossal” mansion and then by Jordan Baker. At the end of the chapter, Gatsby is standing alone in the darkness. Re-read these sections and share your impression of Gatsby.
