1
Macromolecules: Essential Question: What are the four macromolecules and what are their roles in the body?
2
The 4 Macromolecules Proteins Lipids Nucleic Acid Carbohydrates
3
Carbohydrates Sugars & Starches
Main source of energy for living things Generally end in “-ose” We have talked about carbs before! When? Photosynthesis-makes glucose Cellular Respiration-Break down glucose to make ATP
4
Lipids Found in fats and oils
Make up the cell membrane (phospholipid bilayer)
5
Nucleic Acid Stores and transmits genetic information
Made of nucleotides DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) Double stranded Adenine pairs with Thymine (A-T) Guanine pairs with Cytosine (C-G) RNA (Ribonucleic Acid) Single Stranded Adenine pairs with Uracil (A-U)
6
Proteins Proteins are composed of amino acids
They have a variety of uses in the cell Control the rate of reactions Regulate cell processes Form important cellular structures Transport substances in and out of cells Help fight disease
7
Protein Mini-Project You will be given a card that has the name of a protein. Research the following information for your advertisement/flyer. Do not write anything you do not understand. Use multiple sources.
