1 Biology I 7-1 The light microscope was invented by Anton Van Leeuwenhoek. Light microscopes can magnify up to 1500 times.

2 Robert Hook gave “cells” their name.

3 Hooke’s drawing of cells

4 Matthias Schleiden and Theodor Schwann further advanced knowledge of cells.

5 Cell Theory All organisms are composed of one or more cells. 2. The cell is the basic unit of structure and organization of all organisms. 3. All cells come from pre-existing cells.

6 The light microscope

7 The Electron Microscope
-Magnifies up to 500,000 times -Developed in the 1930’s and 1940’s -the electron microscope blasts a subject with a beam of electrons that bounce off. -this allowed scientists to see objects inside a cell.

11 There are two basic cell types
Prokaryotic Cells and Eukaryotic Cells Prokaryotic cells are bacteria Eukaryotic cells make up all organisms that are not bacteria. Eukaryotic cells have more organelles than prokaryotes and are more advanced.

12 Cells take many different shapes
Some cells are individual organisms by themselves. We call them single-celled or unicellular. At some point in the evolution of life multicellular organisms evolved and their cells became specialized to do a specific job (such as carrying oxygen – the red blood cell).
