1 Textured Bridges A STEM to STEAM Unit
Co-Presenter: Jennifer Selfridge Presenter: Julie Stone Polk County School Board

2 Engineers as Artists Design Construct Problem Solving Develop technological Solutions Base on these characteristics today’s engineer not only uses math, but uses fine arts to broaden engineering perspectives.

3 Types of Bridge Designs
The types of bridges you will need to research for this assignment are: Truss Beam Arch Cantilever Suspension Cable Suspension

4 Brain Challenge Roman bridges were built with what material? Early Asian bridges used which bridge design? Incan civilizations of South America used a simple type of suspension bridge called ___________?

5 Brain Challenge Answers
Roman bridges were built with what material? stone Early Asian bridges used which bridge design? cantilever Incan civilizations of South America used a simple type of suspension bridge called ___________? rope bridges

6 Truss Beam A Beam is the easiest of the designs to build, it is also the least expensive . Beam bridges are used for shorter distances. A truss bridge is inexpensive to construct because it uses materials efficiently. Early truss bridges in the US were built using wood.

7 Arch Cantilever An arch bridge is very strong and can last for centuries. These bridges are labor intensive, which means it takes many people working very hard to complete a bridge. The Forth Bridge is a cantilever railway bridge in Scotland. It is constructed from steel.

8 Suspension Cable Stayed
A cable-stayed bridge requires less labor and materials. They can cover long spans, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge is a well known Cable Stayed bridge in the central Florida area. A suspension bridge is better for long spans. The longest suspension bridge is located in Japan.

9 Design Concerns As an Engineer using artistic strategies focus on:
The physical principles of your bridge. Both Positive and Negative Textured Spaces need to complement each other. Keeping your design project on budget.
