An Introduction to Deformation
A review of terms and concepts
5
Definition of homogeneous deformation
Material lines that were originally straight remain straight after deformation Material lines that were originally parallel are still parallel after deformation The ratio of lengths of straight lines in a particular direction are the same Implicit in this and the rest of the discussion is the presence of a strain marker
6
Continuous vs. discontinuous deformation
8
Description of secondary structures in terms of deformation
Mineralogy? What records the deformation (strain marker)? Flattening, constriction, plane strain? Is there evidence that shear was involved? Continuous or discontinuous? Homogeneous or heterogeneous? If the latter, can it be divided into homogeneous parts? Interpretation: rock type, name of structure
