Periodic Packet – Day 2 Periods As you look at the periodic table observe that each row of elements is called a period. The elements in a period are not alike in properties. There is a pattern to the properties of the elements as one moves across a period from left to right. The first element in a period is always an extremely active solid. The last element in a period is always a particularly inactive gas.  There are seven periods of elements. You will also notice that one row has been separated out of Period 6 and Period 7. Even though these two rows are displayed below the main part of the table, they are still part of the periodic table. They have been separated out to make the table shorter and easier to read.

2 Groups and Families Columns of elements are called groups – there are 18 groups on the table. Elements within the same group are called a family and have similar but not identical properties. Families may be only one group (or column) of elements, although some families may contain more than one group (or column).

Color each period a different color (There are 7 periods) Information on periods found on Page 114 Below the table include the definition of periods. Organized by Families – Table 2 Color each family a different color (11 families) Hydrogen should be not be colored - It is not apart of any family. Below the table include a brief description of family- not group. This description will be your own based upon reading and notes –info found on page 114 under groups. Above Groups 3-12 create a color-coded key for your family names.
