The periodic table displays the symbols and names of the elements along with information about the structure of their atoms. 56

57 Groups Periods Each horizontal row of elements is called a period.
Columns of elements are called groups or families. Elements in each group have similar but not identical properties. For example, lithium (Li), sodium (Na), potassium (K), and other members of group IA are all soft, white, shiny metals. All elements in a group have the same number of valence electrons. Each horizontal row of elements is called a period. The elements in a period are not alike in properties. In fact, the properties change greatly across even given row. The first element in a period is always an extremely active solid. The last element in a period, is always an inactive gas. 57

58 Alkali Metals They are the most reactive metals.
They have one valence electron They react violently with water. Alkali metals are never found as free elements in nature. They are always bonded with another element. 58

59 Alkaline Earth Metals They are never found uncombined in nature.
Like alkali metals, they are also very reactive. They have two valence electrons. Alkaline earth metals include magnesium and calcium, among others. 59

60 Halogen Gases Halogens are highly reactive, and can be harmful (Chlorine and Bromine are used as disinfectants) They are the most reactive non-metals They have 7 valence electrons They include Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine Fluorine is the most reactive. Once it does react with something, it bonds so strongly that the resulting molecule is very inert and non-reactive to anything else. Eg. Teflon is fluorine bonded with carbon. 60

62 Hydrogen The hydrogen square sits atop group AI, but it is not a member of that group. Hydrogen is in a class of its own. It’s a gas at room temperature. Its nucleus contains only one proton (no neutrons!) and it has only one electron Hydrogen only needs 2 electrons to fill up its valence shell. 62

Bonding between non-metals consisting of two electrons shared between two atoms. In covalent bonding, the two electrons shared by the atoms are attracted to the nucleus of both atoms. Neither atom completely loses or gains electrons as in ionic bonding.
