Warm Up: Tuesday, March 13 Imagine yourself and your life in 10 years (or, 5). What does life look like for you? What will you be doing? What will your relationships be like with your family and friends? What will you be looking forward to? Worried about?
2
Did your response… Include growth and advancement of some kind?
Inspire excitement? Confusion? Fear?
3
It’s normal to feel uncertain.
No one knows for sure what tomorrow brings. How the warm up related: how can people following a path be compared to Siddhartha, so far, in the text? As far as you know, what does any of this have to do with Buddhism?
4
Learning Targets I can explore the fundamental aspects of Buddhist philosophy. I can connect its tenets to Siddhartha by finding evidence of Buddhist teaching in the text. I can use this information to make predictions about what will happen next based on today’s activity.
5
Buddhism is… a path of practice and spiritual development leading to insight into the true nature of life A way of life, a philosophy of BECOMING/AWAKENING
6
What gods do Buddhists worship?
Buddhism does not include the idea of worshipping a creator god; some people do not see it as a religion in the normal, Western sense. No creator, no god.
7
Then how is Buddhism a religion?
The basic tenets of Buddhist teaching are straightforward and practical: nothing is fixed or permanent actions have consequences change is possible. Thus Buddhism addresses itself to all people irrespective of race, nationality, or gender. It is a religion of wisdom, enlightenment, and compassion.
8
Who is the Buddha? The word ‘Buddha’ is a title, which means ‘one who is awake’ — in the sense of having ‘woken up to reality’ When referring to a single person, people most often refer to the actual Siddhartha Gautama as “Buddha.” Buddhism is based on his teachings.
9
Four Noble Truths The Four Noble Truths are considered the most basic formulation of the Buddha's teaching.

4. How to get the treatment?
Doctor, Doctor Imagine you are going to the doctors because you feel ill. List what the doctor does from the moment you tell him you’re ill, to the moment you leave his surgery. Do this in four stages. What is wrong? You’re ill. 2. What has caused your illness? A virus 3. What will cure it? Taking Medicine. 4. How to get the treatment? Go to the pharmacy
11
4. How to get the treatment?
Buddha, Buddha What is wrong? All life involves suffering. 2. What has caused your illness? The origin of suffering is craving. 3. What will cure it? Stop craving, suffering will also cease. 4. How to get the treatment? To stop the suffering follow the Middle Way and the Eightfold Path.

Four Noble Truths #1. #2. #3 #4 – The Eightfold Path
For each of these, let’s identify how Siddhartha experiences this in the text.

Include page numbers and beginnings of quotes to support. You have 20 minutes. See group below: Haruki Emily Carson Sarah Shelby Patrick Dominic Ben P. Abbie Jill Cooper Josh K. Josh S. Taeler Ben C. After your group is finished…
Find and open the “Eightfold Path” graphic organizer on Google Classroom. Follow instructions as indicated on the document.
