1
The Four Spheres of the Earth
2
Advances in technology have allowed scientists to study the Earth in a variety of different ways.
Submersible Satellite Seismometer
6
The Earth’s Four Spheres
(Geosphere)
7
Lithosphere The lithosphere also known a the geosphere includes the crust of the Earth (rocks, soil, mountains, beaches, and liquid rock)
8
The hydrosphere consists of all of the water on Earth. Of this water
97% is salt water 3% is freshwater
9
Atmosphere The atmosphere is the layer of gases that surrounds the earth. It is composed of: 78% nitrogen, 21 % oxygen, 1% trace gases (eg. carbon dioxide, water vapour)
10
Biosphere The biosphere is the part of the earth where life exists including in water, on land and in the air.
11
They all are connected
12
The Nitrogen Cycle (moves through the atmosphere, biosphere & lithosphere) The Oxygen Cycle (moves through the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere & lithosphere) The Carbon Cycle (moves through the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere & lithosphere)
13
The Water Cycle (moves through the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere & lithosphere)
