1 Answer the following questions in full sentences in your book:
9/9/15 Combustion Answer the following questions in full sentences in your book: Write 3 safety rules that you must follow when using a bunsen burner What piece of equipment must you use to protect the desk? What is a ‘safety flame’ and when should it be used?

2 Methane is a hydrocarbon. What do you think this means?
Learning objectives: To investigate the differences of complete and incomplete combustion and to be able to recall the word equations for both. To be able to balance the symbol equation for the complete combustion of methane. Combustion is another name for ‘b_________’. It happens when a fuel reacts with o__________. Methane is the fuel used in Bunsen burners, gas cookers and boilers in the home. It is a compound made from ________ and __________, and it has the formula CH4. Extension: Methane is a hydrocarbon. What do you think this means?

3 Methane is a hydrocarbon. What do you think this means?
Learning objectives: To investigate the differences of complete and incomplete combustion and to be able to recall the word equations for both. To be able to balance the symbol equation for the complete combustion of methane. Combustion is another name for ‘BURNING’. It happens when a fuel reacts with OXYGEN. Methane is the fuel used in Bunsen burners, gas cookers and boilers in the home. It is a compound made from CARBON and HYDROGEN, and it has the formula CH4. Extension: Methane is a hydrocarbon. What do you think this means?

4 Learning objectives: To investigate the differences of complete and incomplete combustion and to be able to recall the word equations for both. To be able to balance the symbol equation for the complete combustion of methane. Method: Put 50 cm3 of water into a small beaker and record the temperature of the water Place beaker on top of a gauze on a tripod. Heat it for 5 minutes using the orange ‘safety’ flame and then move the Bunsen burner to one side. Record the temperature of the water and describe what the bottom of the gauze looks like. When the beaker has cooled enough to handle it, move it off the gauze and set up a new beaker with 50 cm3 of cold water in, repeat steps using the blue ‘roaring’ flame. Equipment: Bunsen burner Heat-proof mat Goggles Tripod 2 gauze 2 beakers Thermometer Stopwatch

5 Write a short paragraph to summarise your observations.
Learning objectives: To investigate the differences of complete and incomplete combustion and to be able to recall the word equations for both. To be able to balance the symbol equation for the complete combustion of methane. Flame Type Starting temperature (°C) End temperature (°C) Change in temperature (°C) Observations of gauze and beaker Roaring flame Safety flame Extension: Write a short paragraph to summarise your observations. Why do you think you got the results that you did? (Hint: think about oxygen and the fire triangle)

6 Fires without enough oxygen
Learning objectives: To investigate the differences of complete and incomplete combustion and to be able to recall the word equations for both. To be able to balance the symbol equation for the complete combustion of methane. Fires with enough oxygen Fires without enough oxygen

7 Fires without enough oxygen
Learning objectives: To investigate the differences of complete and incomplete combustion and to be able to recall the word equations for both. To be able to balance the symbol equation for the complete combustion of methane. Fires with enough oxygen Fires without enough oxygen

8 Types of combustion for hydrocarbons
Learning objectives: To investigate the differences of complete and incomplete combustion and to be able to recall the word equations for both. To be able to balance the symbol equation for the complete combustion of methane. Types of combustion for hydrocarbons Complete Excess oxygen; Only water and carbon dioxide are produced. Incomplete Not enough oxygen; Water, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and carbon (soot) is produced.

9 Learning objectives: To investigate the differences of complete and incomplete combustion and to be able to recall the word equations for both. To be able to balance the symbol equation for the complete combustion of methane. If the fuel is Methane: CH4 O2 CO2 + + H2O Balance this equation Write this as a word equation. Write the word equation of the incomplete combustion of methane The symbol of carbon monoxide is CO – write the balanced symbol equation for incomplete combustion Extension: Write the balanced symbol equations for the complete and incomplete combustion of the following hydrocarbons: Ethane (C2H6 ), Propane (C3H8), Butane C4H10).

10 Homework - Due 16th September 2015
Research carbon monoxide poisoning. Write a short paragraph on why carbon monoxide is so dangerous. Include how you can avoid carbon monoxide poisoning at home.
