Prompt #9 How do you think the brain communicates with its structures and with the rest of the body?
2
Pg The Nervous System
3
Candy Neuron Build ONE neuron with the supplies (diagram in book shows two – be careful!) You have extra supplies, but DO NOT EAT UNTIL YOU CHECK IN YOUR NEURON Be able to describe how an impulse travels through each structure of your neuron Use the notes you just took Check in with me (WILL HAVE TO EXPLAIN) Draw and label a neuron on sheet with impulse direction included
4
Neuron *Missing: synapse axon terminal neurotransmitters

Draw and label a neuron using the following features:
Prompt #4 What is a neuron? Draw and label a neuron using the following features: nucleus, dendrites, axon, neurotransmitters, synapse, cell body, axon terminal, myelin sheath
6
Neuron *Missing: synapse axon terminal neurotransmitters
7
The Nervous System Controls the body Broken into:
Central Nervous System (CNS) Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
8
How does information travel through the N.S.?
Sends signals (chemical & electrical) Electrical—throughout the neuron Chemical—neurotransmitters
9
Electrical Impulse
10
Important Functions Nucleus: Cell Body: Myelin Sheath:
Holds genetic info Cell Body: Creates proteins Myelin Sheath: Speed up electrical impulses Protect the axon
11
Neurotransmitters Chemicals produced in the cell
Control heartbeat, digestion, mood, sleep, concentration, weight Released and have two options: Info is passed to new cell (transmission) or it stops (inhibition)
12
Neurotransmitters Neurotransmitter Affects Serotonin
Mood, certain processes (sleep, pain, digestion) Dopamine Focus, motivation Acetylcholine Movement, memory Norepinephrine Anxiety, energy, sleep problems, focus Epinephrine Heart rate, blood pressure
13
Neurotransmitters (cont.)
Affected by: stress, diet, toxins, genetics, drugs, alcohol, and caffeine Oversupply or undersupply has been linked to diseases: Oversupply Acetylcholine Alzheimer’s Dopamine schizophrenia Undersupply Dopamine Parkinson’s Serotonin depression
14
Current Article on the Brain
15
Write down one takeaway from their article on back of your assignment
Articles Write down one takeaway from their article on back of your assignment Must talk to 3 people; 5 if you do not have an article to share
16
Brain/Neuron Structure Practice
With your group, you must represent each structure we have covered (11 total) One color = cerebral cortex (divide into structures with lines) One color = inner structures/corpus callosum Check your brain in with me when completed! Then construct a neuron! Check in when done as well!

Review Stations Brain functions worksheets Labeling & flash cards
Take one or both worksheets Check answers with a few minutes remaining Labeling & flash cards Mnemonics/memory strategies Autonomic Nervous System = Automatic/Involuntary actions (i.e. breathing) Hippocampus = school campus (spatial navigation and knowing the layout in your mind) Corpus Callosum Communicates TWO halves Brain quizzing
