Earth’s Moving Surface
Plate Tectonics Earth’s Moving Surface
2
Earth’s Crust is Made of Many Pieces
The pieces are called plates
3
Today we will learn about:
The plates How they move How they interact
4
MAGMA Review: The Earth is made of layers. The solid layers include:
The Crust The Mantle The Core The upper Mantle is also made of some crust Beneath the Crust is the Asthenosphere. The Asthenosphere is made of…. MAGMA
5
Remember:
6
In some places the crust is thicker.
7
How do the plates move? The plates sit on top of the Asthenosphere
The Asthenosphere moves because of convection.
8
Convection Convection is the transfer of heat by the motion of or within a fluid. The basic premise behind convection is that heated matter becomes more buoyant and "rises"; while cooler material "sinks".
9
Earth’s Convection in the Mantle
The magma closer to the core heats up and rises. As the magma rises closer to the crust, it cools, and then sinks back toward the core. Like a conveyor belt the plates move on the magma.

Plate Interaction 3 types of interaction Divergent Convergent
Transform
12
Divergent Plate Boundaries
When two plates move away from each other.
13
Convergent Plate Boundaries
When two plates bump into each other.
14
Transform Plate Boundaries
When two plates slide against each other.

The 3 Types of Boundary Movement
