1 Moles to Grams Calculations

2 A mole is a measurement similar to a dozen (12) EXCEPT much larger. 6
A mole is a measurement similar to a dozen (12) EXCEPT much larger X 1023 units. Now we want to find out how much several moles will weigh.

3 Quick review: What is the molar mass of 1 mole of H2O?
H2O = g/mol

4 So to determine the mass of a substance we can multiply the number of moles by the molar mass.

5 Let’s say we have 2 moles of H2O. What is the mass?
H2O = g/mol Grams = moles X molar mass (2 mol)(18.02 g/mol) = g

6 What is the mass of 2.5 moles of H2O?
H2O = g/mol Grams = moles X molar mass (2.5 mol)(18.02 g/mol) = g

7 What is the mass of 4.25 moles of CO2 ?
CO2 = g/mol Grams = moles X molar mass (4.25 mol)(44.01 g/mol) = g

8 Oh yeah… What is the name of CO2?
Carbon Dioxide

9 Grams = moles X molar mass (0.5 mol)(18.02 g/mol) = 9.01 g
We can also calculate a fraction of a mole the same way. What is the mass of 0.5 moles of H2O? H = (2)(1.01) = 2.02 O = (1)(16) = 16 H2O = g/mol Grams = moles X molar mass (0.5 mol)(18.02 g/mol) = 9.01 g

10 What is the mass of 0.25 moles of NaCl?
NaCl = g/mol Grams = moles X molar mass (0.25 mol)(58.44 g/mol) = g

11 What is the mass of 0.01 moles of SnF2?
SnF2 = g/mol Grams = moles X molar mass (0.01 mol)( g/mol) = 1.57 g
