The Nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, Ukraine
Who – who was affected by the 1986 event in Chernobyl? What – what happened? What are the environmental effects? When – when did the event take place? Where – where did the event take place? How – what caused the event?

Who, What, When, and Where In April 1986, a nuclear power plant exploded in the town of Chernobyl, Ukraine causing the worst nuclear disaster in history. At this time, Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union (the old name for Russia), which dissolved in The citizens of Chernobyl and the surrounding areas panicked as radioactive gases spread over Ukraine, parts of the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, and Scandinavia.
18
How and What The explosion was caused by a chain reaction that resulted from an unauthorized test of one of the plant’s four reactors. About 30 people died immediately in the blast, and over a hundred thousand people had no clue that they were in danger immediately after the explosion because of the radioactive material being blasted into the atmosphere. About 135,000 people were evacuated and resettled in other areas. Almost a half of a million people were told that the nuclear accident may damage their health forever.
19
What The main environmental effects of the disaster have been contaminated farmland, surface water, and ground water. Today, the area around the Chernobyl nuclear plant is considered to be one of the most polluted places on earth. Farm products were devastated temporarily in parts of eastern and northern Europe as a result of the nuclear blast. No one knows how many illnesses and cancers have been caused by this disaster, but about 4,000 children have been diagnosed with thyroid cancer in recent years. The exposure to the radiation caused birth defects in humans and animals, as well as caused cancer in humans. Chernobyl and the land around it will be radioactive for thousands of years. Metal and concrete covers have been placed over the reactor in hopes of locking in the radioactive material. Ukraine and Belarus have spent huge amounts of money on cleanup efforts.
