1 DO YOUR SHARE OF CLEANER AIR

2 Vertical Gardens in MEXICO

3 Mexico City is famous for its heavy pollution and smoggy skyline,
but a recently updated green initiative is attempting to change all that.

4 Many factors have contributed to this situation:
industrial growth, a population boom (from three million in 1950 to some 20 million today), and the proliferation of vehicles. More than 3.5 million vehicles — 30% of them more than 20 years old — now ply the city streets.

5 Many initiatives have been in place.

6 Starting in the 1980s, Mexico’s government created mandates that reformulated gasoline, closed or moved toxic factories, and banned most drivers from using their cars one day a week.

7 However, in 1992, Mexico City was still the must polluted city in the world. While emissions have dropped significantly since then.

8 More recently, Mexico City added a popular free bicycle loan program and expanded public transportation systems Bike sharing scheme, was another way of helping pollution as a way of transportation.

9 Pollution had reached levels that were in fact dangerous to the health of this metropolis, residents and visitors

10 Combating pollution Recently, Authorities have planted 18 million trees in Mexico City and its surrounding suburbs as part of efforts to combat air pollution.

11 Vertical Green, is a project that specializes in creating green space along walls to enhance aesthetics and combat smog.

12 Cleaning the air Vertical gardens produce oxygen and help filter the heavy metals and dust from the air. They also add a touch of beauty to an urban landscape that is barren of vegetation, and it helps clean the air.

13 This project have been underway for years to combat pollution.

14 It´s the recent eco-sculpture installations
that have grabbed headlines and attention.

15 VERDMX The green space initiative is funded by non-profit organization
and was started Back in 2011.

16 air cleaner oxygen vegetation ecology
This 2011 project aimed to develop five vibrant eco-sculptures in locations across the city, which would help to replenish the air´s oxygen levels and fight the pollution problem. Designed by Architect Fernando Ortiz Monasterio and constructed by Verde Vertical. These sculptures received global news coverage and recognition as they helped to make Mexico City´s air cleaner than that of Los Angeles.

17 The sculptures had a positive effect on the capital´s environment
while demonstrating a vibrant integration of art and ecology.
