Start of the day 9.00 till 9.30 Registration, Phonics,
Please arrive on time otherwise your child will miss vital lessons such as: Registration, Phonics, Individual reading and changing books.

Homework First and foremost, support and reassure your child that there is nothing to worry about and that they should always just try their best. Praise and encourage! Support your child: Reading – encourage and listen to your child read at home and ask questions to check their understanding. Spelling – practise and learn weekly spellings and practise spelling Y2 common exception words Maths –Learn x2 x5 x10 tables

What are SATS? In May this year all Year 2 and Year 6 children will sit SATS (Standard Assessment Tests) based on the National Curriculum.

What tests will your child take?
At the end of Year 2, children will take SATs in: Reading Maths The tests are due to take place in May of each year. Writing (Teacher assessed) Science (Teacher assessed)

Science/Art - Woodland walks, healthy eating PE – Mini kickers (experiences vary each year) KS1 Trip in Summer Term

Helpful hints Water bottles, please remember to label your child’s water bottle and to wash them each day. Book bags MUST be in school each day. PE kits to be brought in on the first day of each half term. They will be sent home on the last day of each half term for washing or before if need be. PE pumps, keep an eye on growing feet! Shoes. Velcro is best to help with your child’s independence.

Helpful hints Getting dressed, please make sure your child can get dressed independently. Fastening coats, doing buttons, ties etc. Fruit and free school meals will continue to be provided, however if you wish your child to have a piece of toast you must regularly top up their payment card. Holidays. DO NOT book a holiday in term time especially MAY as Year 2 SATs take place during the whole month of May, not just one week.

READING TESTS The Reading Test consists of two separate papers:
Each paper is worth 50% of the marks and should take approximately 30 minutes to complete, although the children are not being assessed at working at speed so will not be strictly timed. The texts will cover a range of poetry, fiction and non-fiction. Questions are designed to assess the comprehension and understanding of a child’s reading

Maths Children will sit two tests: Paper 1 and Paper 2:
Paper 1 :arithmetic adding, subtracting, multiplying dividing

Maths Paper 2 : Reasoning Problem solving

Is there a Writing test? There is no writing test set by the Government! Teachers will assess over the year and make a judgement based on the evidence in the children’s books.

What happens with the test results?
The test scores are used to help the teacher make a judgement whether you child is: Working towards expected standard (Below) Working at the expected standard (Expected) Working at greater depth (Above) The teacher will not just rely on the test mark but use on going assessment from the child’s books and observations the child through out the year to make their final judgement.
