1
The Cell Cycle
2
What is the cell cycle? The stages are cell goes through to divide into 2 identical cells.
3
Two Parts of the Cell Cycle
Interphase – “resting” phase Cell carries out “normal” day to day activities Mitosis – Division of the nucleus
4
Who is involved? Parent Cell – The starting cell
Daughter Cell – The resulting cells (usually 2)
5
Interphase is made up of three stages:
G1 – Gap 1 – Makes more organelles and cytoplasm S phase – Synthesis – More DNA is made; DNA is replicated G2 – Gap 2 – Cell checks for errors and gets bigger.
6
Form of DNA during Interphase
Chromatin – Long and stringy
7
Mitosis Notes
8
What is Mitosis? Division of the nucleus
9
Form of DNA during Mitosis
DNA is in the form of chromosomes
10
Stages of Mitosis in Order
Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase
11
Prophase - Preparing Chromatin Chromosome
Nuclear membrane disappears Mitotic Spindle forms
12
Metaphase - Middle Chromosomes line up in the middle
13
Anaphase – Apart Chromosomes get pulled apart to opposite ends of the cell
14
Telophase - Two Two new nuclei form Chromosome Chromatin
Cleavage furrow forms
15
Followed by … Cytokinesis division of the cytoplasm
16
What is produced? 2 cells that are identical to each other
