1 Standardization in Automotive Infotainment with GENIVI and CCC
Philippe GICQUEL, General Manager EE Cockpit, PSA Peugeot Citroen President GENIVI Alliance

2 Agenda Preamble – Business segmentation GENIVI and CCC / MirrorLink Perspectives on Apps development

3 Preamble Customer experience is driven by Consumer Electronics Should we leverage customer devices or be more agile on embedded Infotainment ? Both ! How ? Through extensive use of standards

4 Business segmentation
Car Level automotive - mobility entertainment - phone Use embedded solution Leverage customer smartphone e-call World will not use smartphone only or embedded only in the next years

5 GENIVI and CCC/MirrorLink

6 The GENIVI Charter Mission, Purpose and Deliverables
GENIVI is a non-profit industry alliance committed to driving the broad adoption of an In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) based on a compliance statement. GENIVI will accomplish this by aligning requirements, delivering reference implementations, offering certification programs and fostering a vibrant open source IVI community Purpose Ease IVI product integration Enable open innovation and inheritance from adjacent industries Deliverables Aligned IVI requirements across a broad base of OEMs Code that “satisfies” the requirements and “demonstrates” the compliance statements A compliance program against which commercial and FOSS offerings can be certified and ISVs can develop. Mission, Purpose and Deliverables are self explanatory. Compliance program release is most important current deliverable, covered in later slides 17-Nov-18 GENIVI is a registered trademark of the GENIVI Alliance in the USA and other countries Copyright © GENIVI Alliance 2013

7 The Car Connectivity Consortium Mission, Purpose and Deliverables
Global consortium to develop smartphone-based connected-car solutions Bringing car, handset and head-unit industries together MirrorLink® is The open industry standard for Smartphone-Car integration Mission Ease Smartphone Applications Integration in Cars Enable the usage of smartphone applications with adapted HMI to be responsibly used while driving Purpose Specification and certification tool and infrastructure for MirrorLink devices and MirrorLink Applications Guidelines for developers to create Automotive User interfaces Standard API to create MirrorLink Aware applications Deliverable

8 GENIVI Alliance Ecosystem
Based on a community, not a specific supplier dependency 180+ Members and still growing! 13 Automakers 22 Tier1 Suppliers 18 Silicon Suppliers 127 Major Software & Service Suppliers Highlights the impressive roster of members. Based on GENIVI’s achievements and OEM adoption, membership is expected to grow significantly in the near future and continuously over the long term 17-Nov-18 Copyright © GENIVI Alliance 2011

10 GENIVI Target Non-differentiating elements of the solution stack
Differentiation Integration Commercial and Proprietary solutions Implementation Competition Automaker and Tier1 Supplier Domain Apps OSV Extensions Libs HMI - Human Machine Interface Non-differentiating features Consolidated Requirements Auto Specific Middleware Validation/Compliance Alliance Domain Open Source Linux Kernel Open Source IVI Stack GENIVI’s targeted stack components will be non-differentiating or ‘commodity’ features – typically middleware. Higher stack levels such as HMI and apps will be focal point of IVI competition 17-Nov-18 GENIVI is a registered trademark of the GENIVI Alliance in the USA and other countries Copyright © GENIVI Alliance 2013

12 Smart Device Connectivity
MirrorLink in GENIVI GENIVI Expert Group CE Connectivity Smart Device Connectivity Name: Compliance Level: Priority: MirrorLink PlaceholderComponent P2 Description: This component provides MirrorLink capabilities to the platform. MirrorLink is a protocol suite to control arbitrary applications (aka apps) on a connected smart phone. The specification for MirrorLink is freely available at This component complies with version 1.0 of the specification. It does not contain anything 1.1 specific as this version of the specification is not yet freely available. 13 GENIVI moves to OpenSource. What about MirrorLink ?
GENIVI has started to move implementation projects in the open-source world. It leads to share specifications on certain topics in the open. MirrorLink shared it’s 1.0 specification enabling OpenSource implementation. it seems important to continue in this way specification 1.1 is expected as soon as possible in the open too. 17-Nov-18 GENIVI is a registered trademark of the GENIVI Alliance in the USA and other countries Copyright © GENIVI Alliance 2013

14 Perspectives on Apps developments

15 Need for standardized Automotive WebAPI
A unique effort on Apps ? Embedded Infotainment Smartphone Product-Specific Software Native Framework Software Platform Middleware Kernel Native App Application Framework HMI Foreign WebApps Framework Need for standardized Automotive WebAPI

16 Apps need Car Data While the user drives it’s car, a big amount of data is created and circulates in the car electronic infrastructure. These data are valuable for plenty people and companies. There is a large number of initiatives to define a standard. Through its connections with both Autosar and W3C, GENIVI is in a perfect position to drive the translation and expose vehicle ECU messages to Infotainment Web engine. CCC/MirrorLink needs to address the question of giving access to Automotive Data. CCC could stick to this GENIVI initiative in order to avoid another fragmented branch.

17 Considerations on MirrorLink ecosystem
Certified Apps development need to accelerate now, without waiting for car data interface To motivate Apps developments : MirrorLink availability in Phone OEMs roadmaps need to be communicated MirrorLink availability in Automotive OEMs roadmaps need to be communicated Certification process has to be easy and cheap. The fact that Apps deployment targets could be both smartphones and embedded systems in the future would make the market larger for Apps. Close collaboration between GENIVI and CCC make sense on this topic.

18 Thank You
