Anarchy No Government Not Sustainable
Usually results in a dictatorship

Republic Led by representatives of the voters who serve for a term (set period of time) Multiple political parties The people are the sovereign power so they are free from any fear of official or elite control/punishment Liberties and Rights are protected by a Constitution Attention is focused on the common good

Democracy Majority Rules (whether good or bad)
People vote directly on issues Not bound by a constitution Not sustainable

Monarchy Head of state is the monarch, or king or queen
Divine Right, or the will of God Holds position for life, able to pass down the crown to descendent Now, most monarchs are symbolic heads of state and not politically influential heads of government

Dictatorship Authoritarian: a person with complete authority
Gains control or is put in position of authority by others (usually by force) Dictators are free to do as they please. Citizens have few rights. Dictators usually stay in power until they are overthrown. Advantage- decisions can be made quickly.

Totalitarian One leader or political party has total control of all aspects of society including: the Police, Military, Communications, Economy, Education, religious groups, and HAIR CUTS Government censorship- prohibits everything that criticizes the government No separate political parties, labor unions, or other organizations are allowed People who oppose the govt. are sent to labor camps or killed

Theocracy Run by religion/religious leaders
Govt. claims to be directed by god or divinely blessed. No separation between church and state People of other faiths are often excluded or expelled Can take the form of a monarchy, dictatorship or totalitarian
