95 God’s Gifts in Preaching
Preparing Almost Grassroots Encouraging Overflowing

96 Grace comes equally to all persons Jefferson
Luther Grace comes equally to all persons Jefferson We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal

97 Preaching is grassroots.”
“Grace is grassroots. Life is grassroots. Preaching is grassroots.” Dr. Kennon L. Callahan, Ph. D. 2018

98 grassroots village empire

99 God is drawn to Village. Where Jesus is born is sacramental,
is purposeful, is intentional, not accidental Jesus is born in a manger, not a mansion.   He is born in a cattle stall, not a castle.   Christ is born in a cradle, not a cathedral.   Christ is born to Mary and Joseph, not to a King and Queen, an Emperor and Empress.

100 We make much of the high and lofty, the pedestal and prestige,
the power and the prerogatives, the pomp and circumstances.   There is much made of the might and power of persons in lofty positions and places.

101 God gives much attention to Village.
Humankind gives much too much, much too much attention to Empire. God gives much attention to Village. God gives much attention to Grassroots.

102 conquest and expansion ego and self gratification
Empires, across the millennia of human history, arise because of the  confluence of these dynamics: trade and commerce safety and protection power and control conquest and expansion ego and self gratification “we need to get organized”

103 “God” endorses this plan.”
the empire says “we will protect you if you give us your power you will have no power but you will be protected The Empire claims “God” endorses this plan.”

104 for a large collection of villages.
The Experiment builds on the convictions 1. grace is grassroots 2. what works in villages will work for a large collection of villages.

105 Among the early experiments in this direction
was in one of the great city states of Greece, namely, in Athens and the surrounding area of Attica. In 507 BC, Cleisthenes created a system of gathering people in what he called a demokratia, a rule by people.

106 any grassroots gathering
we are now engaged in an experiment as to whether any grassroots gathering of life and government can endure.

107 Welcome to an Experiment
Welcome to Grassroots Welcome to an Experiment Welcome to some of the best days of your life

108 God’s Gifts in Preaching
Preparing Almost Grassroots Encouraging Overflowing

109 Under threat, people whither.
With Encouragement Under threat, people whither. With encouragement, people grow. Dr. Kennon L. Callahan, Ph. D. 1979

110 Under Threat Yes, under threat, people mobilize....
Their adrenaline surges…. yet more.   There is a momentary, fleeting flash of productivity. The runner runs faster.   The pitcher pitches faster.   The student studies harder.   The singer sings better.   It works…. for a short time.

111 Under Threat And, we become, along with all of this,
more tense and tight, nervous and anxious. Threat produces fear.  We live in fear.   We live in excess.   We do not live in balance.   We try too hard, under threat.

112 Under Threat…. we create
passive aggressive behavior low grade hostility subliminal resentment eruptive forms of anger

113 With Encouragement we create
active, leader behavior high creativity deep appreciation a relaxed intentionality

114 God’s Gifts in Preaching
Preparing Almost Grassroots Encouraging Overflowing

115 Overflowing…. Hope is overflowing Preaching is overflowing

116 Humanity is capable of much peace much fear much good much evil much hope much despair much compassion much dependence much community much isolation

117 There is much evil in the world. There is much fear and anxiety
There is much fear and anxiety anger and rage, strife, sin, pestilence, war.   There are ugly, evil, wicked, vicious, sinister, diabolic, demonic people in the world. They live in fear.   Be not naive.

118 amazingly, abundantly clear the complete, full, whole work
Sermons make amazingly, abundantly clear the complete, full, whole work of Jesus Christ, the Son of God with his birth, growing, life, teachings, gatherings, miracles, sacrifice, death and resurrection on earth.

119 Sermons share the good news of grace, peace, hope, resurrection
with those living now, to free them to live fully and wholly in the overflowing hope of God.

120 Laughter and hope are good friends. Joy and peace and hope

121 5 minions lead humanity astray
Compulsive addictive perfectionism Greed Power, excessive desire Gossip Unhappiness

122 Some people fall in love with their own unhappiness. They create….
live in their own living hell.

123 some people fall in love with their own happiness....
By contrast, some people fall in love with their own happiness.... with the overflowing hope of God.

124 the land of happiness is filled with grace and compassion
For them, the land of happiness is filled with grace and compassion community and family peace and joy encouragement and hope

125 Human beings have the capacity to create a living hell.
God has the capacity to create a living heaven. Heaven is overflowing hope, peace, grace.

126 Karl Barth When you accept Christ, you are living in heaven now. John Wesley Even in the fires of hell you are surrounded by the asbestos of God’s grace.

127 God’s gift to you is a life of happiness….
of grace, peace, hope, resurrection, the four freedoms of strengths, motives, pace, hope…. You are blessed beyond measure with joy and peace, and overflowing hope.

128 You are predestined to benefit from the Four Freedoms. Trust God.
God encourages you, with the power of the holy spirit, with all joy and all peace, to overflow with hope.

129 I see the Christ You Are I see the Christ in You
I see the Hope You are I see the Hope in You You are hope…. Dr. Kennon L. Callahan, Ph. D. 2018

130 God’s Gifts in Preaching
Preparing Almost Grassroots Encouraging Overflowing

131 Worship Leadership Preaching

132 God’s grace, peace, and hope are, in the end,
so winning and irresistible, so alluring and inviting,

133 so compassionate and loving, so winsome and encouraging,

134 so overflowing with hope that we are drawn to God’s way of living.
so warm and welcoming, so overflowing with hope that we are drawn to God’s way of living.

135 God wants us to have freedom for the direction of our lives,
God wants the decision to be ours to make.   God wants us to have freedom for the direction of our lives, here and beyond.

136 through the course of the universe, and beyond the end of forever,
Hope overflows….   Before the beginning, in the beginning, through the course of the universe, and beyond the end of forever, Hope overflows….

137 and beyond the end God bless you with overflowing hope this day
of forever more. Amen.
