3 The Butler Tourist Resort Life-Cycle Model – shows the typical life-cycle of a tourist resort. It has 7 stages, which a resort goes through on its journey as a tourist destination. Blackpool is an example of a resort which has been through it all!

6 Stage 1: Exploration New, undiscovered resort Small number of visitors Unspoiled’ area = big attraction Very few impacts of tourism Tourists generate small amount of income

7 Stage 2: Involvement Visitor numbers start to increase Hotels and transport facilities provided for tourists Events for tourists

8 Stage 3: Development Visitor numbers continue to increase Some built attractions are starting to develop The area starts to be advertised and offers package holidays = a tourist destination

9 Stage 4: Consolidation Increase in tourists starts to level off Transport and access routes are now very good Local economy relies heavily on tourism Majority of locals work in tourist industry Wide range of facilities Beginning to impact on environment Local/tourist conflicts

10 Stage 5: Stagnation Standard of facilities and services declines Becomes old, run-down and tacky Negative impacts on the environment are noticeable Visitors numbers start to drop off Locals may resent tourists who have taken over town
