United Nations Framework Convention of Climate Change
The United Nations Framework convention of climate change in 1992 was extended by the Kyoto protocol in 1997 Ultimate Objective: stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations at a dangerous level IN which developed countries will lead the way Industrialized nations agreed to support climate change activities in developing countries through financial support Mechanisms Developed Countries are expected to cut the most emissions on home ground as they are the source of most past and current greenhouse gas emissions Direct New funds to climate change activities in developing countries Providing financial support (loans, grants) Require countries to report regularly Provides more leeway in amount of greenhouse emissions to developing countries.

The Kyoto Protocol of 1997 Mechanisms include
International Emissions Trading This allows nations to trade excess assigned amount units (AAUs), and other units equal to one tonne of CO2 Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Assists countries without emissions targets in achieving sustainable development Help those countries with emission reduction targets under Kyoto in achieving compliance by allowing them to purchase offsets created by CDM projects Joint Implementation (JI) Allows a party to to earn emission reduction units from an emission reduction/removal project in another party The Kyoto Protocol of 1997 The United Nations Framework convention of climate change in 1992 was extended by the Kyoto protocol in 1997 The Kyoto Protocol commits its Parties by setting internationally binding emission reduction targets. Placing heavier burden on developed nations based on the common but differentiated responsibilities. Adopted in Kyoto in December 1997, entered into force February 2005
