1 The Periodic Table of Elements

2

3 Ti 22 4+ 3+ Titanium 47.9 atomic number ion charges(s) symbol
3+ Ti Titanium 47.9 ion charges(s) symbol Each element has its own box in the periodic table! name atomic mass

4 Atomic Number The number of protons in the nucleus!
The atomic number increases one by one through the periodic table.

5 Atomic Mass This is the mass of an average atom of an element
It is always written as a decimal number It is measured in atomic mass units (amu)

6 Ion Charge This is the electric charge that an atom has
It can be positive or negative, depending on how many electrons it has. An element with a 2+ is missing two electrons An element with a 2- has an extra two electrons. Some elements have one charge, some have more a multiple ion charge

8

9 Periods The HORIZONTAL rows are the periods. They are numbered 1-7

10 Families or Groups Elements are arranged VERTICALLY in families
Families have similar physical and chemical properties

11

12 Groups 1-Alkali Metals 2-Alkaline Earth Metals 17-Halogens
18-Noble Gases

13 Metals, Non-Metals, and Metalloids
What characteristics do these have? Metal Nonmetal Metalloid

14

15 Lets make a periodic table!
You will be given 2-3 cue cards with a chemical symbol on them. Fill in all missing information Blue cards are metals, yellow are metalloids, and pink are non-metals! Create a large periodic table on the whiteboard!

16 Ti 22 4+ MP: 1668 °C BP: 3287°C 3+ Titanium 47.9 atomic number
3+ Ti Titanium 47.9 ion charges(s) symbol Each element has its own box in the periodic table! MP: 1668 °C BP: 3287°C name atomic mass

17 Periodic Game Write your answers on the back of your cue card. Include the person’s name and what element they had in their possession

18 Find someone who has an element that starts with the same letter

19 Find someone who has a mass that is only 4-5 g different than yours

20 Find someone who has an element that is double your atomic number (or you may have to find someone who is half yours)

21 Find someone who has an element that is the same charge as yours.

22 Find someone who has an element that has a different charge than you

23 Find someone who has an element with an atomic mass less than yours

24 Find someone who has an element with an atomic mass greater than yours

25 Find someone who has an element that becomes before you in the alphabet.

26 Find someone who requires a higher melting point than you.

27 Find someone who has a boiling point that is at least 1000 degrees away from your boiling point

28 Find someone who has a melting point that is less than yours.
