1 BELL WORK! Quietly flip through your composition notebook to review what we’ve learned so far. What is mass? How do you measure volume? What are five different lab tools? Is weight and mass the same thing? How do you read a triple-beam balance?

2 Find the mass! 176 grams 105.6 grams

3 What’s the Mass of the Liquid Soda?

5 CATEGORIES! Pat, pat Clap, clap Snap, snap Say a lab tool here…

6 How aware are you?

7 Pg. 14: THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD
1a. Make an Observation State the Problem or Ask a Question Research and Gather Information Form a Hypothesis Experiment and Test Your Hypothesis Gather and Analyze Data Make a Conclusion Communicate the Results

8 What did you notice in the picture?
1a. Make an Observation What did you notice in the picture?

9 Observations vs. inferences
Observations There are two bears. They are standing on rocks. They have brown fur. Inferences They are mad at each other. They are brothers.

10 Observations vs. inferences
He surprised her with good news.

Look up! You just observed that only some of the lights are turned on.

12 1b. State the Problem or Ask a Question
Since you observed that some of the lights were turned off, it made you ask… “Why are some of the lights turned off?”

13 2. Research and Gather Information
Google it! Ask around! Look in This is the part where you take notes. As you are doing research, keep track of your new knowledge.

14 3. Form a Hypothesis If-Then statement
Does light give Coach Harris headaches? If the lights are all turned on, then Coach Harris will get a headache.

15 4. Experiment and Test Your Hypothesis
This is the fun part! Make sure you only test one thing at a time. Write a good procedure.

16 5. Gather and Analyze Data
Record your measurements. Stay organized by using tables and charts. Put your results in a graph!

17 6. Make a Conclusion Look over your data and see if your hypothesis was correct or not. Write a good paragraph explaining the data using words.

18 7. Communicate the Results
Share with the world so your experiment can be repeated or extended.

19 Today’s Assignment: Pick one of the questions below. Use your “chosen” question to complete the handout. What breakfast gives you the most energy in gym class. What is the most popular lunch option in the cafeteria. What annoys my best friend? What type of joke makes my teacher laugh the most? When is the best time to go to the grocery store to avoid long lines?

20 EXAMPLE: What is the fastest route from my house to school?
Question: What is the fastest route to school? Hypothesis: If I take Main Street to Elm Street to avoid the light on Maple Avenue then that is the fastest route to school. Experiment: Drive to school at the same time each day at the same speed, taking a variety of routes. Make sure to include the hypothesis route. Record the time for each route. Analysis: Analyze the different route times, selecting the fastest. Conclusion: Determine whether your route hypothesis was correct. Discussion: Share the results of your test to help others get to school on time.
