1 Crimes Against People Some crimes can be specifically categorized as crimes against people. -cide: Latin for “the killing” Justifiable homicide: *police officer kills in the line of duty *soldier kills enemy in battle Excusable homicide (classification of death): being killed on accident

2 Murder Murder is the unlawful killing of another human being with malice aforethought. First degree Second degree Attempted **state by state name

3 First Degree Murder One or more of the following circumstances:
Pre-meditation Involving cruelty/torture Committing another felony such as robbery or rape

4 Second Degree Murder When none of the first degree options apply, it is considered second degree Penalties can significantly differ between the two

5 Manslaughter Manslaughter is the unlawful killing of another human being without malice aforethought. Voluntary: Intended Sudden rage and distress Involuntary Accident While doing something reckless

6 Assault and Battery Battery is the unlawful touching of another person. Forceful use of hand, knife, weapon or gun Drugging, spitting, commanding an attack, forceful sexual act Assault is an attempt to commit battery. Some states do not have this distinction Simple vs. Aggravated assault

9 Domestic Violence Domestic violence is any reckless form of physical or mental abuse within a family or household. Children are protected by state law Spouses can seek safety in shelters Protective orders can be issued Enforced by local police

10 Hate Crimes Actions using certain symbols, writings, pictures, or spoken words to cause fear or anger in people because of their race, religion, color, or gender are known as hate crimes. Laws state speech cannot rouse fear or rage Cannot infringe on freedom of speech
