In retrospect the thirteen English North American colonies had a unique character. Though the colonial make-up consisted of British subjects, other Europeans emigrated in hopes of finding freedom and opportunity. As they settled in the New World a variety of forces shaped their lives. From New England to the Middle colonies to the Southern region these forces helped establish a definitive character. Perhaps the most significant force in shaping this unusual character was the role of religion. This was particularly true for New England which found itself greatly influenced by the Puritan church.
