1 The Life of Christ – Lesson 2
The birth of Jesus Presentation in the temple Visit of the wise men Flight to Egypt and return to Jerusalem Jesus’ visit to Jerusalem at age 12 The Life of Christ – Lesson 2

2 Jesus’ Visit to Jerusalem – Luke 2:41-52
Devout Jews “went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover.” What took place? What did Jesus know about His mission? Jesus is 12 years old. Any significance? They were part of a larger “group.” Jesus stayed behind. After a day’s journey, his parents realize He’s not with them. They supposed He was “in the group.” Interesting to think about what took place (the animal sacrifices) at the Passover and Jesus knowing what His mission was. How effective were they? What was Jesus doing “here”?

3 Jesus’ Visit to Jerusalem – Luke 2:41-52
They return to Jerusalem and spend 3 days searching for Jesus before finding Him in the temple. What they found Jesus doing was “sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.” All were “amazed at His understanding and His answers.” His parents were “astonished.” Note how frequently this happened: Matthew 7:28; 13:54; 19:25; 22:33; Mark 7:37; 10:26; 11:18; Luke 4:32; Acts 13:12 Matt 7:28-29 aWhen Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching; 29 for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes. Matt 13:53-54 aWhen Jesus had finished these parables, He departed from there. 54 aHe came to 1His hometown and bbegan teaching them in their synagogue, so that cthey were astonished, and said, "Where did this man get this wisdom and these 2miraculous powers? Matt 19:24-25 Again I say to you, ait is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." 25 When the disciples heard this, they were very astonished and said, "Then who can be saved?" Matt 22:29-33 But Jesus answered and said to them, "You are mistaken, anot 1understanding the Scriptures nor the power of God. 30 "For in the resurrection they neither amarry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 31 "But regarding the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God: 32 'aI AM THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB'? He is not the God of the dead but of the living." 33 When the crowds heard this, athey were astonished at His teaching. Acts 13:12 Then the aproconsul believed when he saw what had happened, being amazed at bthe teaching of the Lord.

4 Jesus’ Visit to Jerusalem – Luke 2:41-52
Mary’s response to Jesus: “Why have you treated us this way? Your father and I have been anxiously looking for you!” Spoken as a true mother! Jesus’ response: (His first recorded words) “Why were you looking for Me? Did you not know I had to be in My Fathers house?” Not just “why were you looking for Me”? Reflecting on what they knew about 12 year old Jesus, should they have known where to look? “Did you not know …?” They did know, had they forgotten? “My Father’s house” – about the things of My Father. His first words indicate His focus on accomplishing what His Father sent Him to do. John 4:34; 6:38; 17:4; 19:28. Jesus’ claim that God was His Father. His special relationship with His Father continued during His time on earth. Matthew 11:27; John 5:43; 8:19, 38; 14:7. Note His relationship with His Father’s house. John 2:16 Think about it: Jesus 12 years in the flesh and 12 years without His Father. Could we possibly imagine what was going through the mind of Jesus the first time He came to the temple where they to worship His Father and teach and instruct His will? John 4:34 Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to accomplish His work. John 6:38 For aI have come down from heaven, bnot to do My own will, but cthe will of Him who dsent Me. John 17:4-5 I glorified Thee on the earth, having accomplished the work which Thou hast given Me to do. 5 "And now, glorify Thou Me together with Thyself, Father, with the glory which I had with Thee before the world was. John 19:28 After this, Jesus, aknowing that all things had already been accomplished, bto fulfill the Scripture, *said, "cI am thirsty."
