French Society Divided into 3 estates First Estate- Clergy
Consisted of about 130,000 Second Estate-Nobility Consisted of about 300,000 Third Estate-Everybody Else Consisted of about 27.5 million

Problems Leading to Revolution
Fiscal Crisis- Louis XVI (16th) worsened France’s financial problems when he borrowed lots of money and falsely recorded it. When the war was over, it took over half of France’s national budget just to pay the interest alone on the debt. The poor often protested and revolted. Taxes were raised

Estates General Equivalent of our Congress
Represented the Three Estates Had not been called upon in 175 years King finally had to call on them because he wasn’t granted tax concessions by the elite.

The Third Estates Act Third Estate consisted of anybody that wasn’t a noble or a part of the clergy. The Third Estate made up about 80% of France’s population. Met at Versailles to choose reps and discuss complaints Wanted France to start a constitutional monarchy That didn’t happen so they renamed themselves the National Assembly and went and wrote a constitution

The Bastille Falls Fell July 14th,1798 King was gathering troops to
arrest reps of the commoners Commoners found out and attacked the Bastille 98 people died before the Bastille was surrendered Other commoners in other parts of France rebelled at the same time the Bastille fell The rebellions led to the Declaration of the Rights of Men and the Citizens.

Shortage of food Constantly lived in terror of foreign threats Economy inflated High rate of unemployment Women lost almost all rights they had People suffered the Maximilien Robespierre’s “Reign of Terror.”

Napoleon Comes to Power
Born in 1769 and died in 1821 Was a young general in the French Army who took over Ruled by popular authoritarianism Nobody could conquered the French army while Napoleon was in power Napoleon brought back order to France, but the price was the Freedom of the French people Napoleon finally fell to the Russians when he decided to invade them in winter.

End of The Revolution Revolution slowly came to an end after Napoleon failed to capture Russia After napoleon was sent to Elba, he eventually escaped Made it back to France and tried to take over again Was defeated at Waterloo and was then sent to the Island of St. Helena where he died. The final disappearance of napoleon was the unofficial official end of the revolution

Chain Reaction End of French and American revolutions inspired revolutions in other areas of Europe Other revolutions were: Haitian Revolution Revolution of 1848 Many other smaller revolutions occurred during the time and were all styled after the French and American revolutions.
