6. Human Genome Project
The Human Genome Project (HGP) is a collaborative effort among scientists from around the world to map the genes of a human in order to better understand human genetics.
Used for 2 basic purposes:
1. Do you carry ‘bad’ genes? Genes that cause diseases?
2. Scientists can develop gene therapy or genetically based medicines to correct the condition.

7. Ethical Concerns?
Genetic screening – should patient be notified that they have defective gene…even though it may not ever cause them to have the disease?
Should insurance companies be able to deny coverage to people based on their genetic results?
Should humans be able to use the results of the HGP to create “designer babies”?
The HGP has allowed scientists to determine DNA sequence of genes important to medicine. Should pharmaceutical companies be allowed to patent gene sequences for use only within their company?
