1 Maternity Clinical information System
Andy Inder Group Manager, Community Health Service Commissioning Ministry of Health

2 Maternity Information Systems Programme
The MISP is an end-to-end electronic record for women as they go through pregnancy and birth. It has started with the MCIS – Maternity Clinical Information System – for DHBs Eventually the MISP will integrate the systems used by midwives in the community, by GPs and by WCTO nurses (Plunket) with the DHB MCIS Women and the health professionals caring for them will have electronic access to their health information at all the points along the journey; the information about the pregnancy & the baby will form the basis of the electronic health record for the child In a childbirth episode, most women spend about 0.04% of the time in a hospital Implementing the MCIS in more DHBs is an action under the New Zealand Health Strategy

3 Maternity Clinical Information System
Where we are up to: Currently in use in 5 DHBs Tairawhiti MidCentral Whanganui South Canterbury Counties Manakau There is a neonatal clinical information component that some of the DHBs are using Community midwives are coming on-board at the end of August

4 Current challenges: Stronger governance by the Ministry of Health in terms of the overall project Better and more systematic management of the changes to MCIS by the Ministry Closing the gap between how the MCIS is working for all clinicians now and how it needs to be working before rolling it out to other DHBs (Accepting some clinical groups believe it is working well) Closer management of the change and implementation process as DHBs come on stream 2017/2018
