12. How did women participate in the war efforts? 330,000 women served in war jobs that ranged from nurses, aides, and drivers. Also they served in the WASPS- Women’s Air Force Service Pilots-- flying planes from factories to airfields. 13. What role did African Americans play in the war? German, Austrian and Italian soldiers captured during the war were provided housing in Georgia. At one point in time over 4,000 prisoners were located in GA, sometimes hired out to work farms or given educational opportunities. Vinson served 25 consecutive terms representing Georgia in the U.S. House of Representatives for 51 years Won his nickname for his advocacy for a strong Navy during the 1920’s and 1930’s He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom U.S. nuclear powered aircraft carrier named after him. U.S. Senator for 38 years Served on the Armed Services and Appropriations Committees Advocate for a strong army in 1930’s Brought and maintained 15 military bases to Georgia Brought in research agencies including the Center for Disease Control National School Lunch Program Segregationist who opposed many civil rights bills during his career.
