2 What is a dialect? Dialect is a regional variety of a language distinguished by vocabulary, spelling, and pronunciation. Dialects of a language are representatives of unique culture. An example would be cantonese to the chinese language. freelanguage.org

3 Why is english spoken differently around the world?
In the past, and even now, english was and is influenced by other languages neighboring it. This is because the other countries use english for trade internationally, but use some of their own grammar, spelling, and pronunciation in it so they can understand it better. An example of words that english has picked up in the past years are: potato (from American Indian), bungalow (from India), and other slang from America. tripadvisor.com potatoes.com

4 What languages have been extinct but have been revived?
language extinction happens when a language is no longer in use by any living people. The European Nation has established the European Bureau of Lesser Used Languages to provide financial support for the preservation of about 24 languages, especially languages belonging to the Celtic branch of Indo-European. Hebrew is an example of a language that has been revived. Words had to be created for objects that did not exist during biblical times. The effort was started by Elizer Ben-Yehuda. Other examples of revived languages are: Irish Gaelic and Cornish. People have brought them back by performing, making tv shows and teaching in school and church with them.

5 What is a language family, language group, language branch?
Language family- a collection of languages related through a common ancestor that existed long before recorded history. Language branch- collection of languages related through a common ancestor that existed several thousand years ago Language group- collection of languages within a branch that share a common origin in the relatively recent past and have few differences in grammar and vocabulary. Example: Indo-European (family), Germanic (branch), West Germanic (group)

6 What are the largest language families?
The Indo-european family is the largest, but the Afro-Asian is almost as large. the indo european is spoken by many in india and the middle east. the afro asian is spoken in the middle east especially arabic.

7 How did the Angels and Noormans contribute to the development of English?
When the normans invaded england some of them decided to stay and form an upper class. over time their language turned from old norman to Angel Norman, a mix of three both

English comes from the family Germanic and the branch Northern Germanic The Germanic languages are a branch of the indo European language family spoken natively by a pop of 500 million people mostly in North America and Australia

9 What is a Creolized Language
A language that results from the mixing of a colonizer's language with the indigenous language of the people being dominate creoles show the diffusion of one language into another, which gives insight as to the history of that country.

10 What is an isogloss? An isogloss is a boundary that separates regions in which different language uses predominate An isogloss divides certain linguistic features such as pronunciation of vowels. One of the most popular and well known isoglosses is the centum-satem isogloss

11 What is Spanglish and Franglais?
spanglish is a combination of spanish and english spoken by Hispanic-Americans is a mixture of english and spanish franglais is a term used by french for english words that have entered the french language, a combination of francais and anglais mixture of english and french
