Virus
2
A Virus is Not Alive Cannot reproduce
Cannot collect and use energy. (cellular respiration) Although viruses have a genome, they need to take over the machinery of other living cells to follow the instructions to make virus copies. Viruses are too small and simple to collect or use their own energy– they just steal it from the cells they infect.
3
Bacteria vs Virus Reproduction
Gizmo…Let’s go!
4
Why does bacteria make you feel sick?
5
Immune Response Coughing and sneezing to shoot bacteria back out
Inflammation of blood vessels to allow for white blood cells to enter and assist Fever induced by chemicals excreted by the bacteria Fever induced by white blood cells to help kill off pathogens
6
Endotoxins These chemicals are released by bacteria and cause fever
If these reach the brain, they can cause meningitis If they stay in the bloodstream, they can cause sepsis…causing leaky blood vessels and compromising the heart
7
Exotoxins Cytotoxins kill or damage cells
neurotoxins interfere with nerve impulses enterotoxins affect the intestines.
