What are the advantages and disadvantages of using land as a resource? How can individuals help manage land resources wisely?

What resources from the land do you use every day? activity
The land on which humans live is part of Earth’s crust. It provides resources that enable humans and other organisms to survive. Make a list of every item you use in a 24-hr. period as you carry out your daily activities. What items contain resources from the land? Which items are renewable? Which items are nonrenewable?

Land as a resource Natural resource – something from Earth that living things use to meet their needs Soil for growing crops Forests to harvest wood Mine minerals Clear areas for roads and buildings

Forests and agriculture
In 1650 forests covered much of the eastern US By 1920 the forests nearly disappeared Some trees have grown back but not as tall or as complex as they once were Forests cut down for fuel, paper products, wood products, agriculture, and development

Mineral resources Coal and other minerals to make products are called ores Ores – deposits of minerals that are large enough to be mined for a profit

Advantages and Disadvantages
Widely available and easy to access Crops and trees are renewable Disadvantages Can take millions of years for minerals to form Deforestation – the cutting of large areas of forests for human activities Soil erosion, loss of animal habitats, affect global climates Pollution – runoff from fertilizers and coal mines

Managing land resources
Preserved land – land that isn’t developed or logged or is minimal Restoring land according to government regulations Using organic farming techniques Recycling products Use yard waste and veggies to make compost
