2 THE ELEMENTS OF ART In ART, we communicate using… THE ELEMENTS.
The Elements is the language used in art to communicate between the viewer and the artist. In English class, we communicate using… In Math class, we communicate using… In ART, we communicate using… THE ELEMENTS.

3 THE ELEMENTS OF ART LINE SHAPE FORM COLOR VALUE TEXTURE SPACE

4 LINE A continuous mark made on a surface by a moving point

5 SHAPE An enclosed space, limited to two dimensions- length and width. Shapes may be geometric (measurable) or organic (not measurable or of nature).

6 FORM- Element of Art A three-dimensional area (height, width, & depth) which encloses volume. Form can be real or implied.

7 COLOR- Element of Art Produced by light of various wavelengths, and when light strikes an object and reflects back to the eyes.

8 VALUE- Element of Art Lightness or darkness; dealing with the degree of contrast between light, medium, and dark.

9 TEXTURE- Element of Art
The surface quality of an object, the way something appears to feel. Textures may be real or implied.

10 SPACE- Element of Art The distance or area around, between, above, below, or within things. Space may be real or implied.

12 EMPHASIS- Principle of Design
The focal point or center of interest, an area of heightened interest in an artwork.

13 BALANCE The way the elements are arranged to create a sense of stability or equilibrium. Balance may be symmetrical or asymmetrical.

14 RHYTHM AND MOVEMENT The real or implied movement of objects or spaces. It also refers to the path our eyes follow when looking at a work of art

15 PATTERN (REPETITION/VARIATION)
The recurrence of an element to create order or unity. It contributes to rhythm and movement in creation of patterns.

16 CONTRAST A large difference between two things; a way of juxtaposing elements of art to stress the differences between them.

17 UNITY The quality of oneness or wholeness, the basic compatibility between all elements within a piece of art.

18 How does the human Form emerge from the white paper using the elements?
How do the Values of grays shown create Transition? What Texture do you think the hair is from this drawing? Rough? Smooth?
